Virgin: So where do you camp?

Post by Hootus » Thu Jul 23, 2015 11:50 am

First timers, 60ish, Class C, festival vets, desert rats.
So we've cleared the entrance. Are you then directed to a certain direction to camp?
(not associated with any camps). Just go and wing it? And, we don't mind close neighbors, but would
like some room, unlike festival "camping" where you can hear your neighbors breathing.
The drone videos on YouTube look like lots of room between rigs.
Can't wait!!

You will be told to not set up in any space that is reserved for placed camps...these areas will be marked with flags. Other than that, it's pretty much wherever looks good. When you find a spot you like, be sure to check around with any neighbors already there and make sure it's cool with them that you set up next door- not only because it's the polite thing to do, but because it's a good way to make introductions! The farther you go toward the outer edge of the city, the less crowded it will be. It'll all make a lot more sense once you get there :D
The playa isn't "home" to anything or anyone, it's not magic, it's just a goddamm camping trip. A really awesome one. -Captain Goddammit

It's helpful to have a general idea of what part of the city you want to end up in. I can tell you that if you turn left when you go through the gate it will be louder than if you turn right. For the most part the loud sound camps are along the 2 and 10 roads, but the ones that aren't (that I'm aware of) are all floating around the Tokyo Sector (Duck Pond and Distrikt both on 9 come to mind, along with pink mammoth at 8:30).

There's nothing really like these around 4:30 that I'm aware of, at least once you get that far from Esplanade.

Yep, that first fork in the road after gate pretty much flavors the rest of your experience. Choose wise.

It is not unheard of to park your rig on one of the outer streets, pull out the bikes, lock up, mark on the map where you parked, and go exploring.

Pedal around, see if something catches your eye, take in the smells and vibe.

Find a spot you like, go talk to the folks you see there, offer up a cold beer, get to know your prospective neighbors.

Then get back to you rig and move in.
