Hey, YG, good insurance or not, I sure hope you don't have to use it. Stay safe. Wild fires have always spooked me. So out of our control. Yesterday we were up at a dear friend's place, 140 acres of wild land in the mountains above Cloverdale. Very few homes, all on serious acreage. First thing I thought of as she drove us on a dry grass mountain road to the top of the property was a spark or hot muffler igniting that parched dry grass. Beautiful view of the sunset and coastal ranges at about 3,000 feet.

Her husband reminded me of you, YG. On weekends for the past 2 years, he has hooked up a water system from a spring, erected a 40' x 40' canvas home on a platform with a wood stove for he and his wife and 3 year old daughter, set up solar panels for power, built swings and decks, an outdoor kitchen with hot and cold running water, cleared about 50 dying pine trees, built a bathroom with tub and shower that is nicer than those in most homes and a large vegetable garden and so much more. Really amazing and all done by this one very talented Englishman. We had a great dinner under a 20' x 40' pavilion with an astro turf floor. Fun day with dear friends of over 30 years. I've know the hostess since she was 10. Got home at about 11.

Now back to trying to get my plans together for the Burn. Arghhh it is almost August!

Hugs to all.

wow, sounds cool Marty!! sounds like a great time, with great folks!!
yeah, insurance and all aside, I try not to burn that much of me at once. a little welder/shirt/pants fire is one thing, but when the forest is burning, it's another!

and, I set out a pan of water, so the raccoons might leave my water storage bag alone. I seems to have worked, at least for now:

Stay safe, Yggy. Colorado has been fortunate enough to avoid any big fires this year but we've had plenty over the last few years...my little corner of the state has been spared so far but it's only a matter of time before one hits here, I'm sure.

Good luck keeping those raccoons where you want them!

Great post M.Marty !
for a little while I thought they might be where some persons in my world live
but my friends are not English and they do horses.

Yes Yggy I do trust your instinct to know when to run.

When I was single parenting (forever) ..I also worked for the forest service and fires
up in Shasta County and others
anywhere
good work and they gave us great food
(which of course I took home)
but I am always fire wary now ..even at brc.

I tried napping with the kitties. Naps don't work for me. Sucks too. Wish I could sometimes.
On my 3rd quart of herb ice tea. Beer didn't work well a few days ago, not when I'm struggling to hydrate ALREADY!

:!:
It's here. Fire season. Apartment building and trailer park evacuated, walking distance from here. Impressive turnout of water-dropping aircraft -- both rotor and fixed-wing. Luckily, Clear Lake is only a mile away.

Purpose of this post: Be careful out there! No grinding or cutting anywhere near dry grass! Everywhere is an absolute tinderbox.
I don't even want to mention... people who smoke cigarettes and such. I walk thru the area that is now burning almost every day -- cigarette butts everywhere.

Latest; 50 % containment, additional resources cancelled. But I'm leaving the garden hose turned on for a good while yet.

Please spread the word. Don't even kick a rock -- that's all it takes to make a spark.

:D
The real THANK YOU! goes to all the crews who put this one out before much real damage was done. 10 acres went up in minutes, but the massive response stopped it there.
It sounded like I was living in an airport here for an hour or two.

Now I can sleep after all. :D

There should be a very special place in HELL reserved for those who design on line training, and the managers who expect you to do this in the middle of the night.

dang, smokey here this morning. the fire is still going, but seems to not be coming this way. there are so many homes between me and the fire, the (heroic) fire crews are holding the line from them, and therefore, me. Happy for that. We're expecting a heat wave, starting tomorrow, over 100 for the next several days, and high north (drying, red flag warning) winds. I think I'll arrange some bug out stuff.......in case I can't fight it with Frankencamper.....

playing with stuff, and still thinking of parts to order. I have no ability to visualize a timeline of completion. Never have. Time runs out and I take what is ready, often stuff that's been in use for years. I am going to pack this weekend, the stuff that won't be changing between now and then: camp kitchen is pretty dialed in.

I found a little amplifier with an fm radio, usb, and flash drive player about the size of a pack of cigarettes. soooo cute.

Yiggy - am watching the evening news - you ok? We are worried about you. You have many homes where you never need to knock. How can we help?

awe thanks folks!! so far, the fire line on my side seems stable, at about 3 miles away. There are concerns about a wind shift and heat up for the rest of the week, but, for now seems stable here. The fire fighters are protecting homes and letting it run in unpopulated areas. 20% contained, last I heard. They are using the big planes, 4 engine jobs, C130, and such.
hoping they get a handle on it soon. lots of folks, animals, and homes threatened.

I do have Frankencamper at the ready........got my fire hat, coat and boots. Can't find pants, so, I'll just fight it that way!!
