I'm working outside today, mostly in the sun. 100 F +. Good conditioning for TTITD. Of course... I keep going in the house and drinking PBR on ice. So work is slowing down a bit.

Indeed, and I'm going thru quite a bit of the stuff, while watching the Rock Fire, which broke out around 4:30 this afternoon and had spread to 1,000 (a thousand) acres by 7:15 p.m.. People are being evacuated along Morgan Valley Road, right into Main Street in Lower Lake, which is a mile from here.
The view to the east is pretty much a wall of smoke.

Luckily, the wind is from the south, so no smoke here -- though some above at high elevation.

Millicent The Bus is warmed up, key in the ignition, gate open. Vital documents, meds, and rudimentary clothing onboard.

Amusing anecdote: Around 5:00, as the column of smoke was beginning to dominate the view, the UPS van arrived with my new 5 pound fire extinguisher for camp.

Another amusing anecdote: I moved here from Norway to get away from rain and cold. Now I have 100 F, 10% humidity, and every time somebody so much as farts, a couple thousand acres goes up in flames.

Rock-n-roll. I'm working with grinder, cut-off saw, and welder -- in my all-steel barn. Life is good.

In other news.... Hurricane party at Elliot's house! Make that Wildfire Party. Absolutely amazing glow in the sky from the fire. It's kind'a my bedtime, but I will just keep working on Stuff while keeping an eye on the fire.

As of a couple days ago, I have purchased all the beer and wine for the camp. And being a perfectionist, we must sample every case for quality. If necessary, we could probably put out this little 1,000 acre conflagration with all this PBR.

...Would constitute "abuse of alcohol", though.

The fires make me nervous, and I'm in Utah. In a well watered suburb. But it hurts my heart for everyone. Seeing El Cajon Pass on fire was insane. Larry used to drive through there once or twice a week. Stay safe!

We have a few fires going here in central AZ, now. Very smoky in the valley the last few mornings.

Actually, this morning it seems as if there were no big fire at all last night. All the overhead smoke has blown away, and there is only a small column of smoke to the distant east. The fire moved south and west in the night, but there is not much smoke to the south either. So they seem to have gotten it well under control. Too early for much news on the interweb yet -- everybody was up until 3 a.m., like I was.

Mere words cannot adequately thank the brave young folks who choose to go in harms way to protect us old coots and our grandchildren. Firefighters, I salute you!

The fire east of me is still going, with more smoke than this morning. But they are clearly taking this seriously -- just check out this air tanker. That's no puny old piston-pumping decommissioned submarine hunter. That a full grown jetliner! Must carry a prodigious amount of water or retardant.

Elliot - Yg, happy to hear that the fires seem to be abating a bit. Very scary. We are lucky here in southern Marin near the GG Bridge where it is a cool 70 or so. 20+ degrees warmer just a few miles to the north and east of us.

Hi FT, good to see you here once again. Overcast and cool here as well this morning, YG so that is positive news on the fire front.

Placement tells me that I will be camped in Hushville on E at about 5:20 again this year. I will have my hydro cooled ladies only massage table at the ready between 3 PM and 6 PM on Monday - Friday. Massage or not, I hope many of you do stop by to say hi. We will be arriving with Early Entry on Thursday and working ARTery shifts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Won't be long now! Ninth year and it is still exciting!
