Another year has passed, and this means another edition of the Unofficial Diabetes Supplement to the Burningman Survival Guide is ready.
If you are a diabetic burner, PM me your email address and I'll send you the latest edition hot off the presses. It's 26 pages and 13,500+ words in PDF format. (Guaranteed to cure insomnia! LOL!)

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
T2 here. This is my first burn, but this was great information. Thank You.
I'm maxed on oral meds and use Lantus at night. So, I now have an email into my doc to ask about changing the Lantus dose if need be.
Thank You Again for all this info!

PM me your email address and I'll send you the latest edition hot off the presses. It's been massively revamped and is now 26 pages and 13,500+ words in PDF format. Its really aimed at T1's, but much of it translates to insulin-dependent T2's too.

Once again, we bump this thread and I shall begin my shameless trolling for all you Type 1's out there. (You know who you are are. You are the awesome guys and dolls who have tossed-out their pancretic islet cells, stared Death in the face, and said "Fuck you! I'll control my own insulin delivery, thank you oh so very fucking much!!!!)". You are the few. The proud. The stuff of legend. Those worthy of respect. YOU ARE MY CLAN!!!
On a deadly serious note, if you are a Type 1, and you are about to land on the playa, and you want to burn with a (safe) and awesome intensity, please hit me up. There is an art and science to this. Let me give you the missing part of the Burningman Survival Guide. Let me give you some tools so you can have a chat with your endo and plot a strategy that will keep you safe, alive, and burning hard! HARD!! Not like some some pussy-whipped Noob, but like the PARTY ANIMAL you are!
FWIW, I wont be in the dust this year, (sigh) but I damn Skippy will help my T1D Peeps attain a legendary level of control in my absence! YOU are my Tribe and this information is your power, so put away the shyness and PM me.
You know who you are. Do it.

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
Heading back to BRC this year, with a couple of changes since the last time - Still on MDI's but taking Toujeo now for my basal. Also, I'm now using a Dexcom CGM so that adds a layer of complexity to the experience. Looking forward to it.
I'm considering getting some of these instead of an annoying medical alert necklace/bracelet.

Diabetes is quite the thrill ride.clem24 wrote:Diabetes sucks. I am still surprised how my cousins blood sugar level rose above 180. It's scary. And the blood sugar level chart is showing he is at the danger zone.
That being said, 180 mg/dL is really nothing to worry about. This is way, way short of a panic. At 180 he has months before issues will occur. Frankly, MOST Type 1's spike that high, or higher, after a meal.
That being said, 180 isnt ideal. If he is cruising at 180 as a matter of course, then its time for him to review his basics: carbs, correction and continuity. Bolus. Basal. 180 just says "yo! A little attention here!"
Personally, and speaking STRICTLY for myself, I'd just hydrate and see what happens. Dehydration on the playa is some of what drives high BG's. So add water until you piss clear and then some. Retest in 3 hours. You would be shocked what happens when water gets added. Still high? Maybe a smidge more basal or a correction bolus. He'll know which based on his logs.
You: you're a damn good friend to be watching his back. Thank you for that. If he gets over 400 for more thn 30 minutes, or over 300 for more than an hour, snag his ass and haul him off to the med tent for inspection. And any time you see more than 450, for ANY amount of time, he's on the next MV to Rampart, no questions asked.

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
Belated follow-up.
I absolutely LOVED having the Dexcom on playa. Given that mealtimes can be somewhat inconsistent, being able to keep an eye on things and where I was trending at any given time was just perfect. I didn't run high once, and only dropped low very briefly and was able to correct quickly and easily.
I was on playa for more than 2 weeks, and with all the heat and sweating I did need to change my sensor once while there. That was probably the worst part. I used a friends RV to try and cut down on some of the dust, but it was like 4 million degrees in there. The sweat was pouring off my forehead and into my eyes so much I couldn't see properly. Next time I'll just do it in my shade structure.

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
Yup, dexcom rocks. Nothing like CGM when shit is out of your normal regimen. But you have to have charging for your phone/monitor. personally good because I have my Aliner with generator and house batteries.
Reach out. no one will deny you charge when you tell em why
on the sensor change front: you can coax up to 12-13ish days out of a sensor. I put a new one on in Fernley regardless of where I am at by insertion date. Throw on a simpatch (https://tinyurl.com/y9ajga5zor) or equivalent to make sure of adhesion.
T1- burning since 2010

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
Yeah, I normally get 2 weeks from a sensor - anything more and my skin starts to freak out and leave welts. I was hoping to make the sensor last the whole time, but with the heat, sweat, and dust it got to the point where it was barely hanging on. No amount of retaping or adhesive helped
Fortunately my camp has generators and a charging station. I'd just top up the charge whenever I was there so I never had any problem with that. But good idea on asking for help from other places in an emergency. I have a tendency to not do that.

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
Thank you So Much for having this page of such useful information.
I agreed to go to burning man for the first time this year but i’ve been Very worried that being type onederful could make this a dangerous situation. Happy to hear there’s a bunch of onederfuls who made it there and back again and had fun too.
I still have to read all the tips, but from what i’ve read so far it looks like i need a cooler and a bracelet. I already got a dexcom coming in the mail which i’ve never used before, am wondering if it will make matters easier or harder. (Does all the dust and sunblock make the tape stop working? Will it get in the way of my dancing playing and cuddling) I am also a bit concerned that dust will get on my pen needles (could that cause an infection?)
Then there’s the whole water thing.. I’ve been hospitalized for dehydration before, back when i had an endo who was convinced i was type2 and didn’t have me on enough insulin. So now that im on the right meds it isn’t likely to happen again, but being in a desert does make me concerned. I’m gonna get a camelback and some large canteens to keep on my bike i guess.. gonna go read up some more on yalls suggestions.
This seems so much more doable now, thanks again!

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
Hey fancy, T1 here and going for my 9th year. Definitely do-able.
that said, the key is to watch yourself. the dexcom really helps. get a sports patch for (link above) it the adhesive it comes with isn't enough IMHO. I'm totally used to mine and don't find it getting in the way of much. its more of a conversation piece that anything (hey guys! I'm wired for bluetooth now!)
Never had an issue with infection. the dust is pretty inert. I just swipe quickly with a disposable prep pad and shoot.
Water is critical for anyone out there, but just make sure to keep a bottle or bag with you and keep sipping all day.
Most important ... let your camp mates know (and know what to watch out for, how you act when low, what to do, etc..)
Cheers

Hot damn, I've found my people. That is one amazing guide, GreyCoyote.
This'll be my first year to the desert. I'm on a tSlim pump and a Dex G6. Trying to decide if I should use my phone as receiver, or use the actual Dex receiver. Any thoughts?

Hey Full,
Do whatever you are used to, no sense in adding another unfamiliar process. I use my phone for my dexcom IRL and on playa. (airplane mode because... who needs bullshit when I'm out having a great experience)
I'm a shooter, but from talking w other pumpers you just want to make sure to have some sort of wrap (saran, pouch, baggie, etc...) for your tSlim. The dust is really fine and can mess with electronics. I keep my phone in a zip-lock too.
Cheers

Thanks, Shoe....and Sham...(that kinda made me giggle after I typed it)
I'll probably just stick with my phone then. I'm used to it, and I'm not sure how element proof the receiver is. Onward with planning....

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
7th time burner but this year is the first time I'm going insulin dependent / T2.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a cooler for insulin and weekly injectables like Trulicity and Buydurion? I'm incline to get a small Yeti but I feel like the Yeti I have now is too cold and everything freezes.
I'm going up for build (Wednesday pre-event) so I'll need something to last a couple days till Artica opens.
Suggestions and experiences?

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
Both manufacturers do list acceptable duration of storage at room temperature. Best check there and with your Dr.
As for cooling a few days without freezing ... a regular small cooler with ice in it, preferably a block so it has less surface area than crushed, then some bubble wrap on top and your pens in a sealed Tupperware will do the trick.
Then the usual ... keep cooler in shade and off the ground.

11 year burner T1 here. Humalog injection 6x+/day, Lantus 1x/day, Afreeza PRN as needed.
Any cooler with standard ice (not dry ice) will not freeze your insulin. Just keep it up and not in the muck of cooler water, bacterial contamination is what you don't want with the inject-ables. Like token said, block lasts longer than crushed.
Honestly my dailies (or in your case weeklies) are not the hard part. Put em in a cooler, you're good.

Hey There, Friend.
If you don't get any results from seeking him via Googling "eplaya GreyCoyote diabetic" , or "eplaya GreyCoyote diabetes" the best thing to do would be to 1) save everything you can, to investigate it for yourself, and link it later--if you like it. 2) Never quote or publish anything he's said, unattributed, anywhere, on a website or book, unless you have permission from him . . . . 3) please insert many caveats, indicating that the info is casual, anecdotal, and based on personal observational experience--not signed off on by health professionals, unless you actually are one, and willing to put your credentials on the line. Always, ALWAYS, tell people what your credentials are.

I’ve had a bunch of requests for this document, but it isnt clear if it survived the Great Hard Drive Crash of 2020. So I’ll look, and if it still exists, I’ll publish it and stick it into the public domain.
Reminder: I am NOT a medical doctor and this document is NOT medical advice. It is practical advice. So a smart T1D burner would print it out and take it to their next appt with their endo for discussion. If yer Doc says “bueno”, then use my advice, but for Dogs Sake listen to your endo if it runs contrary to my thoughts!
FWIW, diabetic management on the playa can be mostly summarized as shades and phases of this:
1). HYDRATION. Seriously. Read that again. Damn-Skippy important! “Piss-clear” is where survival starts!
2). vigilence. Sure you are paranoid, but the question really is, are you paranoid enough?
3). testing. Do NOT slack off on the finger-sticks, dammit!!!
4). Have a wingman. And empower said wingman/woman to “call the ball” if you get out of control.
If you can manage these things, then you’ll have a leg-up on having a safe, epic burn! If not… well… re-read the back of your ticket.
Let me root around and try to find this little rant…
"To sum up my compassion level, I think we should feed the unwanted animals to the homeless. Or visa versa. Too much attention and money is spent on both."

In 02 my diabetic camp mate was driving all over the road and ditchs ahead of me. Took 25 mile of blowing horn and CB to stop him. After that I took the lead and kept an eye on him when we rest stopped. We went to BM from 02 - 10 together. YES YOU NEED A WING MAN

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
So I just went from shooter to pumper... started on the Omnipod and gave up my Lantus for a steady drip.
any words of wisdom I need to hear about burning this year with a new device?
Any issues with the Pod or controller out there?
I'm a little concerned that I'm wandering around in 100+ degree heat with 3 days of insulin strapped to my belly. wondering if anyone has had the insulin onboard the pod fail due to heat. In previous years I've kept my Humalog pens in a little evaporative cooling pouch when I'm out and about during the day.

any words of wisdom I need to hear about burning this year with a new device?
Any issues with the Pod or controller out there?
I'm a little concerned that I'm wandering around in 100+ degree heat with 3 days of insulin strapped to my belly. wondering if anyone has had the insulin onboard the pod fail due to heat. In previous years I've kept my Humalog pens in a little evaporative cooling pouch when I'm out and about during the day.
Thanks

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
I ain’t no doctor or no kind, but a device that is glued onto your body that is by very nature at 97-99 degrees…
I think they solved that heat range pretty good just to get FDA approval.
Now the glue patch and Playa dust … that’s the thing I’d be thinking about.

Re: Any diabetic burners out there?
good point... wasn't thinking of that
I've got some overpatches and a buttload of tape. So here's hoping I can make it work.
Nice thing is I can glue em to my belly under a shirt so dust is a little mitigated. More the sweat I'm worried about on that front.
