Used Billboard Vinyl is Miraculous Stuff
So huge! So cheap! So easy to work with!
I get it at the local billboard company. After they take billboards down they sell them. They come in three sizes: Big, Huge, and Ginormous.
It folds up to quite compact.
We use it as flooring for our whole camp. We used to use old carpet which was heavy and bulky and nasty to store at home and got clogged with playa dust.
The billboard vinyl works so well! It was easy to deal with during and after last year's rain. ( I don't even want to think about what that carpet would have been like after last year's rain.)
It's easy to cut to any size or shape you want and the edges don't need to be hemmed and don't moop.
You can pound stakes through it. It takes duct tape well.
You can use the design side if it has a good picture (we have one with rubber duckies) or you can use the unprinted side. (We cut off any advertising writing or logos if we use it printed side up)
A few years ago a friend used some kind of chemical or adhesive (maybe contact cement?) to bond the edges to make a small structure (a time machine, actually). I don't know what it is but if you want to do that you can google it.

Re: Used Billboard Vinyl is Miraculous Stuff
From what I understand, there are two kinds of billboard "vinyls" -- the real "vinyl" and a type that more resembles a woven plastic tarp (like the notorious blue tarps, but better quality).

The "glue" (but not really glue" for vinyl is HH=66!!!
The true vinyl's were $30 each, and the other stuff was free.

The only kind I know of is true vinyl. No weave. But good to know for people who live in areas where there's both. Ask for, and pay for, the real stuff!
Thanks for the tip Elliot.
And thanks Figjam for the HH=66 tip. (and thanks for walking me through making a bucket cooler a couple of years ago. It was too feeble to cool my whole big tent, so I bought a tiny one person tent and I have a cool little afternoon Nap House now).

Our billboard vinyl flooring is pushing 15 years. Good stuff. We do use area rugs over it, and bring a push broom.

Re: Used Billboard Vinyl is Miraculous Stuff
Roughly what is the cost to buy used billboard vinyl?
I know we use some in our camp for shade. If you can get a good image, it can be seen easily from aerial or satellite photos.

Here in Reno, it's $30 for a 14x48 and there's a waiting list. I think they've gone to the lightweight stuff.Sham wrote:Roughly what is the cost to buy used billboard vinyl?

We're trying out a piece of it this year.
Re: Used Billboard Vinyl is Miraculous Stuff
There is at least one company that sells them online, but I imagine the price is much higher that way, plus freight.

Bonding Billboard Vinyl to Itself
Thanks to Figjam, consider making your vinyl dimensional.

Here's a link that I found after reading this post. https://billboardtarps.com/ Prices seemed reasonable to me.

It seems like the best thing to do is stroll on over to a local billboard company and make puppy dog eyes to see what they can do for you.
Bring some fresh baked cookies with you.

Clear Channel is the main source.
Here it was a matter of finding the warehouse.
There wasn't a set price list, so I think it was up to the guy running the warehouse.
First time they were $20 each for the 14'x48' vinyl's.
Went to pickup 2 for Elliot a couple of months ago and only brought $40.
I was told they were now $30 each.
After talking with the warehouse guy, he let me have the 2 14'x48' vinyl's and 5 of the 14'x48 "other" stuff for $40.

All you hipsters claim Burning Man is better on vinyl, but I'm still going to pave my camp with the clean digital fidelity of CDs.

if you were bedazzling your vinyl, would that be called "vidazzled", not to be confused with vagazzled, which is a different thread.FIGJAM wrote:Bedazzle your vinyl!!!

Re: Used Billboard Vinyl is Miraculous Stuff
Just got a callback from Clear Channel in DFW, they are $8 each around here. Will probably grab a couple for flooring in the next couple days.
Re: Used Billboard Vinyl is Miraculous Stuff
Make sure they are selling the real vinyl's for that price.

Re: Used Billboard Vinyl is Miraculous Stuff
Went ahead and picked a couple up. It looks like the backside is black on mine, so I will probably use the advertisement side with some rugs, otherwise it will be camp slurpee. I got about 30 comments in 45 minutes on the DFW Burners group so it looks like these will be popular. They had tons available it looked like.
Re: Used Billboard Vinyl is Miraculous Stuff
BBV users: do you think it'd be a good choice of material to cut/fold/tape as a waterproof floor for a hexayurt? I find a cheap blue tarp to be lacking.

Excellent! I think a lot of people will be paying more attention to waterproofing their hexayurts this year. It's been a kind of idyllic few years for our precious foam domiciles.
