If you show up at 9 for the temple burn won't it be over?

Those are always on "playa time". Regardless of supposed planned schedules, you cannot count on a specific burn time. Unknown and uncontrollable factors like weather and dust can affect the timing, as well as who knows what else.
Burn time is evening sometime. That's the best you can count on.

Thank you.

Last year, I was working the early Night Watch shift at the airport and I missed both burns and had forgotten the approx. times.

This year, the last Know-It-All shift that I supervise ends at 7:30 pm. I think that I shall hop onto my trusty three wheel steed and immediately head on over. Being early will only get me a better place to sit.

Don't forget to aim to be upwind!

When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.

The Temple burn (subjectively) seems like it's gotten earlier each year I've attended. Definitely ask around later in the week--playa info, BMIR, ARTery, rangers, etc. are all good resources that should be able to give a best estimate. I understand the logic of burning it earlier, in order to get people on the road that much sooner and ease Exodus a tiny bit more, especially if there are weather concerns (if I recall correctly, there were predictions of serious rainstorms Monday post-event in 2013 that never occurred). It seemed like it hadn't even gotten dark out last year when they lit it up, though. I almost didn't make it there in time, and I had friends that didn't realize it was burning until they saw the smoke and pedaled out as fast as they could.

"Dark Thirty!"

The man burn historically begins sometime between 9:30 and 10. It's easy to spot, since the people flow like rivers out of the city streets and towards the center of BRC. Give your group lots of time, because lots of people and moving in a group always takes more time than you think. The man burn is also typically preceded by a big fire performance and fireworks.

The temple burn used to happen at around the same time, BUT NOW HAPPENS EARLIER! The big Sunday night burn takes place around an hour earlier. There is often some sort of ceremony, and my understanding is that it takes place either at or immediately after the sun dips below the mountain. The length of time of the ceremony can vary from year to year, and then the structure is burned.

Moving the temple up a bit allows it to still be a significantly meaningful burn for those interested (I think there's something poetic about aligning it with the sun going over the mountain, IMO), but at the same time easing exodus for a significant number of burners. I personally stay through, but for the many thousands who plan to leave or strike camp immediately after the temple burn... it's easier. And bonus points for having a tiny bit more light in the sky, it's made for some really wonderful photographs and video. Here's a piece my girlfriend shot of the Temple Of Whollyness burn in 2013 (which I think was the first year it burned earlier).

And the obligatory mention that every major burn is subject to favorable weather conditions.

I think 2008 had a wind delay and conclave was canceled?

There was another year I remember wearing goggles, getting stung all over in a whiteout while getting ready for conclave before the man burn.

It's all a bit hazy.

I think the year DustDevil had the jet engine Diablo installation.

You are correct: It was 2008 My first burn was 2009 and I remember the Conclave people in my camp were still bummed out about it.

2008, ugh. We navigated out to the Man with the fuel cart, on foot, lamp post by lamp post. Had to have the cart near the perimeter when the conclave performance was cancelled. Most people were nice about not smoking near us, but one dude put his ciggie cherry out on Larry's forehead after Larry reached down and pinched the lit ciggie out. Dude was lucky the conclave didn't kick his ass.

The Man burns after Fire Conclave finishes.
Temple has been 8:00PM sharp for the last several years.

Visit the ARTery at 5:30ish /Esplanade for times and locations of all the scheduled burns.
We can also help you figure out what the weird thing out on deep playa is :)

And speaking of the Man Burn.... at 6pm on Monday, Crimson Rose starts the fire that will be used to ignite the Man five days later. This performance takes place in the area between Center Camp Cafe and the Keyhole art piece. Come and watch with me!
