Surviving being Hunted
Surviving being Hunted
With the mortality rate for first time burners hovering around 60% I feel that we old time burners must take extra care to help virgins survive the Saturday round-up and culling. Many first time burners do not realize that from the moment the man falls they only have a 30 minute head start to either blend-in or find body-heat signature shielded hiding spots. If we work together and provide tips we could probably push the mortality rate back under 50% (like it was before the rule changes in 2006.) Now that we are no longer allowed to help or inform first timers in the "quiet period" following the fall of the man, and until the sun breaches the horizon on Sunday morning, it is important that we provide as much advice in advance as we possibly can. For that reason I am asking all of you experienced burners to post your tips.
Here's my top tip:
-Kostume Kult is the first place the hunters look: Despite not being operational on the night of the burn, many first time burners attempt to ditch their t-shirt/jeans here after the man falls. This is a deadly mistake.

Much like the bobcat, playa hunters are preferentially attracted to feathers.

Dehydration while in a secure hiding place is a real possibility. Pre stock your hiding spot with water. (And make sure nobody sees you when you do.)

The best place to hide is in a full porto near a big sound camp. Have a friend put a ziptie through the lock hasp. NOBODY will EVER find you!!!

I hid by digging a trench 2 ft wide 2.5 feet deep and 6.5 feet long; lying on my side and pulling the playa in over me. People laughed when I brought a snorkel to the playa, but I won!!!

I've moved this to Open Discussion as it's more appropriate, and re-titled the thread.

It's been in my head for a while. There's a company that does custom all-over print photo hoodies. I might try it for Hanukkah.

Blah blah blah... don't die first time burners... blah blah blah.
Have you guys all picked out your formal wear for the hunt? This might be the scotch talking, but I'm really excited about bagging me a few first timers. I just wish there were more to go around. There are so many of us, and so few of them. I wonder if the BMORG would consider promoting White Castle (White Waves? White Ocean? Whatever it's called) with TV/Radio ads like monster truck rallies in order to draw a few more in...

I can't hunt this year, It's only my second year, but it is quite a relief not to be the hunted. It'll be better next year anyway when I get my tags.

Re: Surviving being Hunted
I think it's important to emphasize the fact that there's no time to "slow down," "relax," "catch your breath," "help your friend up," or other such naïve notions. Don't let the fact that the hunters are skipping along in a casual, carefree way give you a false sense that there is a moment to spare. Be in good enough shape to sprint in the dark for at least six hours.
Ain't it a groove?

They say that sparkleponies are "The Most Dangerous Game" . . .
But really, it's me--my contagious hyperflammability, the toxins oozing from my subdermal implants, and all the high-pitched shrieking.

So the numbers are out, Virgin mortality rate was actually up this year to 74%. I really thought we could have helped. If only the mods hadn't moved this thread into Open Discussion and kept in the advice section. All those lives lost.... the tragedy of it all! The dust may have been a contributing factor to first time burner confusion.
