Just the ones from Pennsylvania. They normally have another strategy for dealing with Amish grazing on Federal lands....they work with the church elders in the community, helping them with rides to the store and the like. And the Amish pay their grazing fees. No problems.theCryptofishist wrote:I just want to know if these are the same BLM Rangers who leave service-issue guns in their cars when they park them in San Francisco, and then they get stolen...

This sounds like he's already convinced every single one of us is breaking the law."We don't have the personnel to issue citations to 70,000 naked people on the playa, but we will be upholding the law to the best of our ability," said Jerry Allen, a 39-year-old former deputy who replaced former Pershing County Sheriff Richard Machado in January.

Grey Coyote, give the guy half a break. He's posturing for the media. If that's not enough, let me tell you a little secret: I met the guy last year. He came across as intelligent, and caring, and wasn't a jerk. Just take a look at the stats for last year: only one sexual assault, and four substance abuse arrests. What other city in the U.S. has those kind of stats in a week's time?GreyCoyote wrote:I have to wonder how this doofus managed to complete grade school. A mental giant he is not.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending him, I'm just saying that he deserves a long hard look just like any law enforcement officer as to what his motivations are. The previous sheriff WAS a dick. This guy I expect no trouble from. That's not the case here in Missouri, where our local LEOs were defensive about the cop that shot Michael Brown in Ferguson. I find them to know nothing about community policing. They had better learn quick, because the lawsuits in the wings for jerkoffs like that amount to the millions of dollars in settlement. Even our county sheriff's department is acting rather squirrely again.

Allen took over in January and seems to have issues with the previous agreements between BM and BLM.^Rhino! wrote:Grey Coyote, give the guy half a break. He's posturing for the media. Rhino: lets make sure we are talking about the same guy. Were both his eyes the same color? If so, we are talking about a different dude. Mr. Personality of Pershing County has one brown and one blue eye, a rare-ish genetic feature that makes him instantly identifiable even to the most blitzed burner.
As to his political posturing, he's quite clearly a moron. Done properly he would have said something like "Pershing County is pleased as always to welcome Burners. It is with great pride that I serve this county as Sheriff and I look forward to meeting each of you personally. If you see me, please feel free to come up and say hi. We have some neat swag for the kids. You guys are the reason we can continue to police an event at what statisically is a 4:1 level of understaffing and I look forward to seeing the results of this continuing experiment in community policing. This event stands as proof that interagency cooperation and candid dialogue between all stakeholders can reduce costs while still maintaining an outstanding level of safety for attendees, staff and Pershing County residences. I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable 2015 burn".
Having done that, he's just signalled everything he needs to play the Big Game. The BMORG gets an initial olive branch, and John Q Burner will be pre-disposed to like him. He has signalled solidarity with the other law enforcement agencies. He is perfectly positioned "on the fence" to go either way. If he gets to the 2015 burn and he doesnt like what he sees, he can triple the arrest rate and can then tell the County in his after-action report "we tried to work with them, but laws are laws and these people are breaking them. The BMORG is complicit, aiding in the corruption of children, and this whole thing needs to be prosecuted under the RICO statutes. I had no idea how far off the rails this event had gone!!! Next year I need armored cars, tanks, jeeps, snipers, belt-fed automatic weapons, air support and lots of choco-tacos!!!". And the BMORG would have quietly engaged him, lubed his palm, given him a back-door Handie, and he'd be back on the reservation as an "occasional grumbler" instead of a Big Problem.
Instead, this doofus came out swinging and took a stupid public position that will be hard to back-down from and polarizes the burner community against him. He has signaled to the BMORG he doesnt know shit about tolerance or doing business, and that it will be cheaper in the long run to litigate instead of "acculturating". As his ultimate sin, he distances himself from all other stakeholders including other law enforcement agencies. And he's trying to play lawyer, which is always a sucker bet when you are inhaling donuts and rocking a gun in the sun.
Epic fail, Sheriff. You could have played this for an easy extra 300k for Pershing County and a nice consultant fee for yourself. But now *everyone* loses. Just another backwoods "law & order" hick.

What gets me is how he whines one one hand about how not enough money is spent in Lovelock and, on the other how much those filthy hippies impact the citizens of the county at an event that is 180 road miles away. I would imagine everyone coming from SLC and points east and north of Dallas are funneling through Lovelock. I'd say they should mark their money as Burner Money and make a point of telling the local merchants, "Ya know. If your sheriff makes us feel unwelcome, I'll be spending this in Winnemucca next year.

Ya know, last year I stayed overnight in Lovelock. I was inbound at 11:00 at night and it was not a bad place. I went over to the casino there for a late dinner (hadn't eaten since one) and the waitress there gave me the 10 oz. ribeye on a sandwich (the SAME steak that they serve on a ribeye dinner for $3 more) to "play fair". I stuck a couple of quarters in the slots, and came out with $1. Being ahead, I quit. The room was fairly priced, and I slept well. I doubt if I'll stop in Lovelock this year if their sheriff is a dick.Corvus wrote:What gets me is how he whines one one hand about how not enough money is spent in Lovelock and, on the other how much those filthy hippies impact the citizens of the county at an event that is 180 road miles away. Re: BLM Needs VIP treatment as well.
And LEO loves it when someone does something that makes their jobs harder, and riskier. That lack of wisdom and co-operation on his part will bite him in all his dealings with outside agencies, year round, not just with regard to Burning Man. He's just demonstrated to everyone that he's not the right material for the level of job he's at, let alone any future advancement elsewhere.GreyCoyote wrote:... and polarizes the burner community against him. ... As his ultimate sin, he distances himself from all other stakeholders including other law enforcement agencies...
And it starts already. Who wants to patrol with someone who creates trouble where there isn't trouble.Allen wrote:Another agency has already turned down his request for help due to officer safety concerns, he said. “I’ve had at least one county deny me patrolmen based on the fact that we will not have adequate personnel from the sheriff’s office out there and at this point we don’t know if we’ll have adequate medical coverage if an officer gets hurt,” Allen said.
And he carries on like he's the only policing entity at the event. And his ranting about the settlement agreement shows that he's sure not any lawyer. You'd expect a LEO to at least have some understanding of law. He's gone on record that he doesn't even believe Pershing County's own legal counsel. He comes off entirely as a hothead, not a manger and certainly not a leader, both of which are just part of the requirements of that job. Feel sorry for those under him, who'd made excellent inroads in policing.
Because the way Burners are treated by some police there has lead to people doing their best to avoid the place. There'd been signs in recent years that was improving, now a hothead has thrown all that goodwill generated by the good officers of Pershing away. With a hothead "leading" - why roll the dice by being there.Allen wrote:"Burning Man taxes this county. We don't have the services to provide them. Pretty much everything they buy, they buy outside," Allen said. "I'm not saying we need to make gobs and gobs of money. I'm glad they can bring economic interest to Nevada, but they leave Pershing County high and dry."
