Just the ones from Pennsylvania. They normally have another strategy for dealing with Amish grazing on Federal lands....they work with the church elders in the community, helping them with rides to the store and the like. And the Amish pay their grazing fees. No problems.

He came across as intelligent, and caring, and wasn't a jerk. Just take a look at the stats for last year: only one sexual assault, and four substance abuse arrests. What other city in the U.S. has those kind of stats in a week's time?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending him, I'm just saying that he deserves a long hard look just like any law enforcement officer as to what his motivations are. The previous sheriff WAS a dick. This guy I expect no trouble from. That's not the case here in Missouri, where our local LEOs were defensive about the cop that shot Michael Brown in Ferguson. I find them to know nothing about community policing. They had better learn quick, because the lawsuits in the wings for jerkoffs like that amount to the millions of dollars in settlement. Even our county sheriff's department is acting rather squirrely again.

But Allen wasn't in charge last year. He took over for Machado, who was apparently more burner friendly. Allen took over in January and seems to have issues with the previous agreements between BM and BLM.

Having done that, he's just signalled everything he needs to play the Big Game. The BMORG gets an initial olive branch, and John Q Burner will be pre-disposed to like him. He has signalled solidarity with the other law enforcement agencies. He is perfectly positioned "on the fence" to go either way. If he gets to the 2015 burn and he doesnt like what he sees, he can triple the arrest rate and can then tell the County in his after-action report "we tried to work with them, but laws are laws and these people are breaking them. The BMORG is complicit, aiding in the corruption of children, and this whole thing needs to be prosecuted under the RICO statutes. I had no idea how far off the rails this event had gone!!! Next year I need armored cars, tanks, jeeps, snipers, belt-fed automatic weapons, air support and lots of choco-tacos!!!". And the BMORG would have quietly engaged him, lubed his palm, given him a back-door Handie, and he'd be back on the reservation as an "occasional grumbler" instead of a Big Problem.

And LEO loves it when someone does something that makes their jobs harder, and riskier. That lack of wisdom and co-operation on his part will bite him in all his dealings with outside agencies, year round, not just with regard to Burning Man. He's just demonstrated to everyone that he's not the right material for the level of job he's at, let alone any future advancement elsewhere.

Another agency has already turned down his request for help due to officer safety concerns, he said. “I’ve had at least one county deny me patrolmen based on the fact that we will not have adequate personnel from the sheriff’s office out there and at this point we don’t know if we’ll have adequate medical coverage if an officer gets hurt,” Allen said.

And it starts already. Who wants to patrol with someone who creates trouble where there isn't trouble.

And he carries on like he's the only policing entity at the event. And his ranting about the settlement agreement shows that he's sure not any lawyer. You'd expect a LEO to at least have some understanding of law. He's gone on record that he doesn't even believe Pershing County's own legal counsel. He comes off entirely as a hothead, not a manger and certainly not a leader, both of which are just part of the requirements of that job. Feel sorry for those under him, who'd made excellent inroads in policing.

"Burning Man taxes this county. We don't have the services to provide them. Pretty much everything they buy, they buy outside," Allen said. "I'm not saying we need to make gobs and gobs of money. I'm glad they can bring economic interest to Nevada, but they leave Pershing County high and dry."

Because the way Burners are treated by some police there has lead to people doing their best to avoid the place. There'd been signs in recent years that was improving, now a hothead has thrown all that goodwill generated by the good officers of Pershing away. With a hothead "leading" - why roll the dice by being there.
