Ride safe, and let us know if there's anything else you'll need...
Delle & Kenny and I usually are over-prepared.
We'll have wonderful shade, too!
See you SOON!

Re: Motorcycling to BM
hope it holds the bolt holding the swivel part is 3/8 dia . and the bolt holding the up and down action is .500 dia. The 3/8 has alot of twist on it when its on its kickstand , but going down the road the trailer rides straight. The pin will have a pulling on it while going down the road but that should hold. Crosses fingers
Only going to go 5o - 55 so should get there .

I would suggest grade 8 bolts.

The hwd store has galvanized and stainless and regular with a zinc plate. I will have to ask where number 8's are.
The larger .500 bolt is 10" all the others only went to 6" , if I cant find the #8 for the 3/8 ths bolt I will change to stainless steel .

Re: Motorcycling to BM
Would a piece of cable holding it be a good idea? Or would the sudden shift of weight when the cable catches the trailer cause more of an issue than the trailer coming off?
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Re: Motorcycling to BM
Most hardware stainless bolts are little better than grade 2 carbon steel in strength but more corrosion resistant and stainless will gall and bend easily. Grade 5 (3 lines) are stronger. If you can find 18-8 stainless, not usually in hardware stores, they will have a tensile strength in the 65,000-100,000 range and a yield of about 65,000 psi. Grade 8 carbon has a minimum tensile strength of 150,000 psi and a yield of 130,000 psi. These are pretty critical, suggest you buy grade 8 and put an extra in your pocket. Grade 8 will have 6 lines on the bolt head.
It is the carbon in steel that lets it become hard. Stainless is low carbon steel.

Costs more, but if Gerlach is selling potable water again, makes your drive easier/safer?tatonka wrote:... water jugs ... would fill them s of cedarville. ...
And you can put them wherever for the slow speed haul from Gerlach to BRC?
Grade is usually number of lines plus two. Some strong grades use ISO markings: 8.8 for 120,000 psi tensile, 10.9 for 150,000. Most grade 8 I get are six lines with a triangle.Ulisse wrote:Most hardware stainless bolts are little better than grade 2 carbon steel in strength, ... stainless will gall and bend easily, Grade 5 (3 lines on head) are stronger,....18-8 stainless ... 65,000-100,000 range and a yield of about 65,000 psi. Grade 8 bolts have grade 8 nuts & washers too!
Warning they keep giving me: using a lube on the bolt reduces tensile strength. No idea why.
So don't store your spares in a condom?
Strongest you can get before you leave.
Have spares.
If not grade 8, stop along the way and check if you can buy them.
Whatever you use, stop frequently to check this bolt for wear, bending and cracks.

One of the stories from early on, is how a bike wrapped in a tarp/cover on the playa can get seriously scratched by the cover in a heavy wind. I don't know how true that is, but I've heard the same for cars, etc..
(Speculating) while you'd have to pack it in something like a stuff sack when you take it off, shrink/roll-wrap may be the safe way to go?

Plus, the wrap would be so much smaller and lighter than a tarp... Just give it to me before you leave, and I'll dispose of it when I get back to AZ.

And not just the bolt - any steel it goes through.
I've had both Grade 8 bolt wear-failures and had Grade 8 bolts chew their way through softer steel, and in towing applications.

Re: Motorcycling to BM
made it back ,
trailer didnt
neck streached to far and was dragging all the time . About 55 miles north of the playa , had to abandon it
Was a good trip none the less , kick stand spring fell off in Lakeview , lost a gas tank mt bolt ( it held on ) .
On the way to BM I crossed the pass in freezing rain , my glasses froze up , and I got mild burn in my thumbs. Which took three days to thaw out.
during the rain the cooler on the trailer filled with water and increased the weight of trailer and started the neck tweeking . igloo cooler didnt seal well
tent was full of dust ( miss my camper ) all food was dusty . For some reason every beer I drank would make me sleepy , so I ended up giving most of it away.
Now the good , it was awesome . I made lots of swag and passed them out to people and got lots of good responses
Went walking around alot on Sat. and got lots of good comments on my fitness as a skinny old man
Hanged with Patsh and Delle and Ken and had a great time . Ken charmed all the ladys in .
Seen RV's leaving on thur, fri , Sat. couldnt believe it , they had a great place to stay , but still gave it up :/

Glad to know you made it home safely, Tatonka!
After you left, I found a nut on the ground where your tent had been... maybe the one you'd lost.
It was great camping with you! Thanks from all of us!
