Greetings folks!

...and all the fuckos still at sea..

Finally rolled in a few days ago after a slow winding trip back home. Nice to be back to the realm of creature comforts, but I sure enjoyed the burn and the freedom of the road.

First though, Marty.. I hope your health is steadily returning, I'm glad you had the good sense to seek medical help promptly, and had the air-evac insurance. Yay for whoever posted that thread on eplaya a while back, though Marty, wise old owl that you are, you may well have already been aware of such insurance. Get well soon! I already sense a certain uneasiness beginning to grow again amidst the tennis balls lurking in the corner.

So.. Autumn officially starts tomorrow, and the days here already beckon toward it slightly. Better still, there will be a total lunar eclipse sunday night, and of a 'Supermoon' no less! (moon is a little closer than usual in its orbit)
I'll be fixin' to do a little howling that night by the fire. Woohoo!

Rejection doesn’t just hurt like a broken heart; your brain feels it like a broken leg.
The Upward Spiral wrote: In fact, as demonstrated in an fMRI experiment, social exclusion activates the same circuitry as physical pain… at one point they stopped sharing, only throwing back and forth to each other, ignoring the participant. This small change was enough to elicit feelings of social exclusion, and it activated the anterior cingulate and insula, just like physical pain would.
I went through this.

Mornin' campers.

Well I had the shit scared out of me yesterday. Even though it was Yom Kippur, I went to a funeral of an old friend. While driving back to Newcastle I noticed my left eye had a large baige-colored spot right in the middle of my field of vision. Probably took up 70% of my vision. I assumed there was something on my glasses, but when I went to wipe it off, the large blindspot remained. Now remember, I was driving on I-80 and couldn't just stop. I was beginning to go into a panic (this lasted about 10 or 12 minutes) when it seemed to "break up" and then disappeared. I was still shaking and having pulled off the highway in Penryn felt safer. I called my OD and he informed me I had an ocular migraine, a term I'd never heard of and I had never had a migraine. In fact, I felt fine. Turns out missing meals is one of the causes of an ocular migraine, and since it was Yom Kippur, I hadn't eaten in about 20 hours. Missed meals indeed. My OD said everything is fine and I have nothing to worry about. Sure, true dat, but finding oneself going blind while driving at 70 MPH can be a rather unnerving experience. But then so is getting hit by lightening, something that has also happened to me.

Wow, that is indeed scary. Glad it was nothing worse, Doc.
And you are not the only one to have such a scare. Some years ago, I started having dizzy spells while driving an 18-wheeler across the country. Finally parked the truck in Flagstaff, Arizona, and was transported home as a passenger in another company truck. Turned out to be an inner ear infection, messing with the balance organ in there -- labyrinthitis, or some such fancy word. Now I keep pills in the glove-box that can see me thru if it ever happens again.
You might want to keep some emergency food handy when you fast. (I assume there is allowance for medical emergency.)

In other news.... Yesterday I finally unloaded the trailer and parked it in its usual off-duty spot. But still unloading bicycles from the bus!

I too am glad you're OK, Doc.

I had a very little scare on playa this year. I was taking a nap leaned up against the glass in my pick-up, when my buddy Black Rock Ranger Tapestry shows up. He thought I was in distress, and called for an ambulance. Turns out I was OK...just tired as hell from working to get the camp set up. They released me from Rampart without even starting an IV...plus my jokes were better than the staff's in any case (that's how they supposedly KNEW I was OK...especially after I refused the patchouli-scented anti-bacterial soap.....I told them THAT was a contradiction in terms......)

No decom yet, and it's been a total nightmare since my return, in terms of workload. Luckily, I got the trailer parked and all the clean-up done the day after I got back. Then, back to work. By the end of last week I had received an e-mail from the Governor's deputy chief of staff, and yesterday I had to go down to the Highway Patrol to get fingerprinted for a background check. A long time ago (I re-learned this at Burningman in 2008) I found out that we've all got to stand up and be counted on in this world, and learn to give back some of our prosperity, sort of like paying it forward with a vengeance. So, earlier this year, I put in an application to be on the Board of Registration for Registered Geologists in the state. It seems that this position is political (not partisan) and gubernatorially-appointed. The appointment would have to be confirmed by the Missouri State Senate. Getting the fingerprints for a background check is the last hurdle before interviewing. I think it could be one way to give back to the profession that's given me so much, and for which I'm very thankful.

Add to this two new research projects out of nowhere, a couple of major landslide repair jobs to be overseen and the usual District geologist work, and I'll be lucky to see the light of day from the paperwork before doomsday. But I love the work, and it's satisfying, so BRING IT ON!

Hugs to all!

I'm glad you are ok, Dr. Pyro. 20 hour fast, you must have had a blast at Burning Man.

Hope things go your way, Rhino. My daughter wanted to be an Archaeologist/Geologist/Artist. Her Archaeology professor talked her out of it and she became a Graphic Artist instead.

It's nice seeing everyone coming back to The Bar and ePlaya.

Good morning AntiM... I kept trying to take you out art-touring and dammit it just never worked out. I made a several attempts and was always foiled, first by getting the directions wrong and searching the wrong area, and the other times by the weather. Oh well that's how it goes out there.
Gotta go wash, drink coffee with Carnation Instant Breakfast in it, and scurry off to work!

Captain, that 'coffee with Carnation Instant Breakfast' must be a last resort. I've been buying the prepackaged Jimmy Dean sausage-egg-cheese croissants at the local grocery store for my breakfast for a couple of years now. They come 4 to a box or 8 to a box, all packaged individually. Throw one in the Microwave for breakfast for a minute, and zap, it's cooked and ready to consume. They also make a bacon-egg-cheese croissant, and they also make both varieties with biscuits instead of croissants. The protein in them makes all the difference before lunch, when I'm trying to stay on task at work.

Maybe I was raised too southern.

REAL breakfast includes a small bowl of cheesy grits with butter and a tablespoon of sorghum syrup, and with chopped bacon for added protein.

Thanks for the thought, BVB.

Glad you made it ok, Doc. I gave up the fast last year as I decided I was of "that age". Up till then it had been about 71 years without missing a year. We had a nice family dinner at my youngest daughter's home in Berkeley to break the fast on Wednesday evening.

Hope you get the gig, Rhino
