Got a great view here... not a cloud to be seen. It's almost back to full, but was all dark red a while ago. So cool to watch!

I think Mercalli II to III is about the same as Richter 2-3, but as it goes up, Mercalli XI to XII is about Richter 8. (Catastrophic damage to all structures)
On the Playa this year, I was prepared to experience about a Mercalli VI. (Richter 5.) Because they describe this as : "furniture overturns; pictures fall", I brought no pictures or furniture. HA!!

That's a fair assessment of the scale, but remember, a Mercalli XII is listed as "Total Destruction"

That may be closer to a 9.0.

In the movie, "Twister", It's like Bill Pullman being asked if there's a category (Fujita Scale) 5 tornado. The room goes silent, and the question is repeated. He looks grim.

"Wrath of God" was all that was said.

Living in the eastern part of Tornado Alley, the movie still gives me chills. When Joplin got hit by an F5, only the reinforced concrete building of the hospital stood up to the wind. Every other part of the path of the tornado was wiped out. Scary.

Comparing an F5 to a Mercalli XII is still like comparing kumquats with full size oranges. A modified Richter scale is a measurement of relative ground motion while the Mercalli scale is a measurement of damage. The Fujita scale is more linked with wind speed.

Considering the Tohoku earthquake was offshore when it hit and caused the tsunami that destroyed the TEPCo (Tokyo Electric Power Company) Fukushima Dai-Ishii power plant, and it measured an 8.6.........I'd still only give the onshore effects of that quake a Mercalli XI. And that's even WITH the added shear multiplier of 2.0 for liquefaction over an active subduction zone.

Accidentally walks into the Burners Anonymous meeting

Hi everyone,
I'm Cricket and I'm addicted to Burning Man. I started building more stuff last night for Burning Man. I've been off the Burning Man for almost 3 weeks.... Only clean for about 48 hours after finishing the cleaning over the weekend.

I'm not sure I have what it takes to stay off the Burning Man. I think I need to build more stuff. Fix more stuff... Design more stuff.

Hi Fishy, YG and Lucky. Everyone seems to be on hiatus from the Bar. Just got out my compressor to blow the dust out of my scooter and bikes. Damn, that dust really sticks to everything. Next is the vinegar/water wash. Also a very messy business.

Plan to be at the SF Decomp on Oct 11 Hope some of you locals like Ratty will be there.
Hope to get there at about Noon to 1PM and stay till about 4 or 5. Let me know if you will be there so we can connect.

Yes Marty! I'll be there. I work in the commissary from noon to 3. I'll have a blanket in the park with an ice chest of beer, Gatorade and snacks. (It's actually a piece of rolling luggage). Look for the 'Eplaya' sign. Help yourself. I'll be there at 3:15 to flop down and drink. I know gaminwench will be there too. Possibly near the silver phone booth where you can talk to God. Hope to see you.

I plan to be at the Decompression, from Noon until... late afternoon, I suppose. Not setting up anything, but will be around the Buddha Camp espresso machine a bit, with Cricket.
It will be difficult to recognize me, wearing my black GP&E uniform.

Elliott thank you so much for hosting the book at your camp. You can toss it out. I don't suppose it got used much. I was so busy working that I didn't even distribute the 100 or so 'eplaya' signs that I made for camps and bikes. Hey. That gives me something to do next year.
