Again, I can second a couple good points that have been made -- specially what Ano just said, and what Sham said.
I logged 56 hours volunteer time this year (plus the travel and check-in time). Practically all my shifts start at 6 A.M., and I must be sober and otherwise qualified to drive a Department truck. (And of course, my driving record was vetted and I'm on BM's insurance as an authorized driver.)

In my job we are supposed to work in pairs, but since we are sometimes shorthanded, I can do the job by myself, which I volunteer to do.

So... I dare say I get a lot accomplished, which is satisfying to me, helps the BRC community, and makes me valuable to the Department.

The reason we are often shorthanded, specially on my "O-dark-thirty" shifts, is that some volunteers don't bother to show up on time. Some people prove themselves in their first year or two, and some flunk out.

Well... seems to me we have better things to do than repeating this fairly simple concept.

Wow, if a ticket is offered, it comes out to 56 cents an hour. We volunteer to moderate here, and a ticket is never expected.

Right. Being recruited in May, for a job that starts when the city opens, isn't year-round work within the organization. Those people don't meet that criterion.

It also doesn't matter that those who receive tickets "usually" fulfill certain criteria. The fact is, this isn't about any particular criteria. The FAQ is merely describing the qualities that most comped ticket recipient have.

Describing incorrectly. Those are NOT qualities that most comped ticket recipients have. Even if you replace the "and" with "or", and very much not so with "and".

I get a comped ticket... but the work I do involves 35+ (usually 48 for me) hours of hard work, including one shift starting at midnight or 6am

If you refuse to accept anything that we tell you, why ask the question? You seem to have already reached a conclusion, and don't care what anyone else says.

There's a great pizza place near where I work in Oakland that has this stuff called "white pie," which has sauce made of garlic puree and cauliflower. It has huge chunks of Ricotta on it, as well as arugula. It is wonderful and probably a significant contributer to my recent weight gain.

I can't lie though, I also love a classic huge slice of cheese. Almost nothing in the world, to me, can beat a gigantic slice of cheese pizza at 2:30am when bars get out.

Multiple people, who some of you seem to respect, have chimed in above with stories of their own gift/comp tickets. Almost every person who has told their story in response to this question (here, and on reddit and fb), with the exception of the forum moderators, doesn't meet the criteria listed in the FAQ.

Yes, I know that eplaya and r/burningman and the fb burningman group aren't great samples of BM attendees, but it's all I've got to go on.

"usually" is not a vague qualifier. In most contexts it means "most often". And by "most" I mean >50%. So, sure, 50-100% is a broad range, and that might be vague, but the "more than half" part isn't vague at all.

Let me paraphrase that sentence for you: "More than half of all free tickets go to volunteers who do work year-round and have high accountability roles". That sentence is false, according to all the solid information I can find (from people actually volunteering and getting free tickets) rather than third-hand generalizations.

There's this little joint near me, they don't deliver, they only take cash, there is no table service. they only make NY style (God I hate that term.... it's pizza everything else is something else) no Sicilian, no stuffed, nothing put a minimalist pie, thin super crispy crust with a proper char, a barely there coating of sauce, a whisper of mozz and a dusting of oregano...IT.......IS......TO........ DIE.....FOR.

They are open to 2AM every day and 4am on Fri/Sat/Sun. Always packed especially with the bar crowd.
I go to a lot of concerts and this is always on the agenda after the shows and before coming home. In fact, 4 of the 5 years I've gone to BM it was my first stop for "real food" before hitting home after weeks on the road full of fat-saturated, carbonated crap. It's comfort food, it's my home away from home away from home.

One thing they do do you don't find in many pizzerias and that's the cold cheese slice originated in upstate NY.It's a belly bomb and antithetical to the minimalist gist but does account for roughly every second order, I definitively appreciate the juxtaposition of cold on hot and contrasting textures but the "regular" is so good I rarely indulge in anything else.

It's a ma and pa shop and they don't feed douches because they only relish the attention and just come back for more bringing all their baggage with them. It's always a wise tactic to save your efforts for people with good intent.

Perhaps, but that doesn't mean they were wrong. I wonder what they meant by less. Less than what? Perhaps they meant that there would be less dust on the ground and more in the air. That makes sense because then they are right and you are wrong in thinking that there was actually more dust. This needs to placed in an historical context. Can someone post the average daily dust content in the air and on the ground for Black Rock City for the last week in August over the past 50 years?

Of course it's also possible they said there would be less rust this year and you didn't hear them correctly.

It's the album of pictures of me. I'm not sure what makes you think that's "self absorbed". I have thousands of photos organized into albums, and one album of s of me. Have you ever looked at your "Photos of You" section on Facebook?
