The version on the Cheap Thrills album is musically better, but this is from the weekend when she became world famous overnight.
I have been listening to Cheap Thrills pretty much exclusively for the last several weeks. Absolutely astonishingly fabulous music.

Roy Acuff's version, more than likely closer to the original than Johnny Cash
I'm in a train mood today. I feel like driving up to Reno to watch trains on the former Sothern Pacific, now Union Pacific, line.

Thank you catman and elliott! You've made my day. Now I'm pondering the age old question. If I could go back in time would I choose Lewis and Clark or Woodstock. That's a hard one for me.

Re: what are you listening to?
Indeed, Ratty! Those are still great memories for me. I remember when I was just a little boy, riding the train from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Cleveland, Ohio, part of the run of the fabled Santa Fe Super Chief. Trains are WONDERFUL for me.Ratty wrote:Thank you catman and elliott! You've made my day. Now I'm pondering the age old question. Lewis and Clark came up the Missouri River not far from here, Ratty, and camped at a little French town called "Rocheport" They were the first of waves of explorers and pioneers of the American western states. Many started their treks not far from my current location. The Santa Fe trail went from New Franklin, Missouri, all the way to Santa Fe, New Mexico via Dent's Fort. Then you have the various forms of the California Trail and the Oregon Trail. Two of those pass right by Black Rock City....the Nobles cutoff on the Oregon Trail, and the Applegate Cutoff on the California/Emigrant trail. I trace these things every year prior to and after Burningman, and am having my own adventures in the tracing.
Catman and Elliott may be having wistful thoughts of Amtrakathon, but I won't speak for them. Instead, I'll add my own train song from my youth.....something from the boys of Blackfoot:
Enjoy!

Rhino, I was thinking of YOU on the drive into the event this year. I was listening to a recording of a GREAT book. The name was A Crack in the Edge of the World. fascinating.

Re: what are you listening to?
Ratty, I have increasingly become more and more of a Western US geologist with the passing of the years, but the way things are currently, I may be headed into a mid-life career change of excitement that parallels your 'Crack in the Edge of the World' -volcanology, structural geology and tectonics. Why? Because people like you and Ygmir and Elliott and Magic Marty convinced me by your happy examples that ANYTHING is possible.Ratty wrote:Rhino, I was thinking of YOU on the drive into the event this year. I was listening to a recording of a GREAT book. The name was A Crack in the Edge of the World. fascinating.
So add that to the serendipity and synchronicity of Burningman that I can thank you for the next time we meet.
Why am I doing it? Because people need me to do it, and it's the right thing to do. Maybe I can save a few more lives before they plant me six feet under, or drop my ashes into a volcanic vent like I want. Like Skynyrd, I could never be a 'Simple Man"....I just have to be something I love and understand.
Pardon me for getting dreamy eyed on y'all's time. Carry on.

Re: what are you listening to?
Last weekend and earlier this week I had a lot of U2 on rotation, specifically a bootleg of the show we went to back in May. A great performance, and some great memories. That was ahead of the broadcast of their show in Paris on Monday night that we watched online.holy crap, it was good. Kudos to the boys for not only bringing Eagles Of Death Metal out for their last song (a cover of Patti Smith's "People Have The Power"), but they gave them the stage to play the last song of the night. That's a big gesture for any band, but when the show is for a big live broadcast and video release, and the last stop of theyear/leg of the tour...
Now I've shifted back into Muse mode, mostly re-listening to the Drones album on repeat ahead of next week's shows (one in SF and two in Los Angeles). I should take a few minutes this morning and knock together a more varied playlist.

The rain pelting the side of the house being driven by 60mph wind.
I'm guessing close to 80 miles gusts in VC earlier this morning. Constant rocks coming down on Geiger.
I guess that would be, in geologic terms, wind erosion

Re: what are you listening to?
The local radio station's Sunday morning sermons from various churches in the area. The churches seem to be doing a lot of Christmas carols this time of year, not surprisingly. Oh, and the sound of the fan in my air purifier and the ticking of the clock in my bathroom.

I do not know how you guys go about posting the actual videos, but this is what I have been listening to of late.
No doubt that some of you will notice the BIG gap between 1971 and 2013.
And, I suspect that I am not the only one of us more-senior folks who hang around this site who have a similar time-gap during their life.

Don't bother. I did it for you. No sense both of us wasting time and being embarrassed for those kids.
