So how did the Dance Music Zone (DMZ) pan out?

Didn't go this year. To those who did, what are your impressions of the DMZ? There was a lot of bitching and moaning about it from some people, did it turn into a giant MOOP zone? Did it improve the open playa experience? How say you?

I think it went as planned, seemed pretty much the same. Didn't hear any bitching, just now there are blue rooms nearby and less dirt to traverse before you get to the next mobile dance party.

I am a BIG fan of the DMZ. The city proper was noticeably quieter, leading to my sleeping much more soundly than ever before. Those who confuse Burning Man with an Ooonz Ooonz rave have somewhere to go and soil themselves and the land without foisting their "art" on the rest of us, and since I was able to avoid their area, I never had to hear "celebrity" DJs proclaim their own awesomeness as they press the "music" button. Three cheers for the DMZ - long may it live, far away from me!

Okay, okay, I actually went out there during the day once. The ground was filthy - piles of MOOP - about what you would expect from electronic music tourists at Burning Man. But again I say "great" - they get a place to be filthy and drugged out and listen to shitty music, and everyone else gets to experience Burning Man.

Well ,whether you like it or not the Ooontz Ooontz is undeniably part of Burning Man's DNA since damn-near day one...It's the pulse of the city.

I don't like the idea of it being a destination for all the EDM Festival E-tards either, but I don't get all upset over it because the bass feels so good...If you want mobile Bluegrass, Death Metal or Country Musics at ear-bleed levels, you'll have to set up shop in the DMZ. (CMZ?)

(EDM lover here. Though that's not what brought me out there, but instead a wonderful surprise. The cherry on top if you will.)

Many of the same people that bitch about EDM at Burning Man are closet-fans anyways, they just don't admit it. You get in their car to go somewhere, and they try to switch up the tracks real quick before you take notice... They may bitch, but they still need their fix.

I'm giving this a nudge over to the Stories board, since I think that's a better fit for the discussion.

To the best of my understanding, I think it worked out fairly well. I also believe that there were only about a half a dozen vehicles that were bringing the kind of sound that would require them to use those spaces when they wanted to turn things way up (and no, I don't know the names of the vehicles).

My understanding is that from a playa restoration standpoint it was easier to target and clean up after those areas than finding random gatherings of lots of MOOP in deep playa, maybe someone from Resto can share their experience.

It's difficult to say what kind of porta-potty impact there was, from my experience the bathrooms this year were the worst I've seen in all the years I've been. Most of that was the fault of United Services, what I saw at banks throughout the city was that as many as a third of porto's were broken from the very start. Broken doors/locks and missing seats were common, and that put a significantly heavier strain on the ones that weren't broken.

The weather may have also been a factor. It certainly was a factor for me, it was windy and cold as fuck at night... and my sorry ass only went out at night a quarter as much as I normally would.

The one time I made it out there it was pretty fun. I seem to remember 2-3 groups of MV's that would circle and make a dance floor. Don't remember any horrible porto experiences so I think they were on par with the rest of the city.

This cannot be emphasized enough. The banks on 9:00 were almost unusable due to broken locks & missing seats. I understand that US wants to use & reuse "decommissioned" portos to save money, but their contract should stipulate that the ones they use have to be in fully working order. Once they're that broken, they should be pulled and replaced.

The light up discs were there all week, it was an art installation. Mayan Warrior was just having an artist approved event there. I too was there that night, what great fun it was...

Ahhhhh ok. I hadn't seen the disks before so I assumed it was something the art car put out there.
