Brisbane Australia Burners 2016 - Event & Resource Sharing

Post by i2bm » Thu Feb 11, 2016 8:52 pm

Hello Fellow Burners.

Well after an amazing time at the 2013 burn, we are aiming to come back for more! Ticket struggle pending of course! I recently washed the last of the playa dust out of my camel-back so I am well overdue a refill!

Abit about me: My name is matt (aka i2.... I dont know where that name came from) and I am hoping to some with about 4-5 friends this year. We are 30-35 and 3 of us went together in 2013. One thing I want to make clear to any vet burners out there reading this... for the three of us who have been and aim to go again, we completely respect what you have built over the years and take all the 10 principles to heart. This is something we are trying to make clear to our virgin friends...

BACK TO MY POINT.... I am just starting this thread to look for other Aussies (particularly other Brisbane-ites) to do some potential resource sharing with.

Last time we came, we ended up buying SO MUCH stuff from Walmart and ended up either recycling, donating or trashing it at the end. We felt that this really didn't fit with the sustainable nature of BM and thought this time we want to do better. Luckily enough, most East Coast Australia to West Coast US flights come with 2x 23KG bag allowance even for economy class, so we want to take alot more there and back with us. If we get a group of similar minded Aussies together, that's alot of gear we can take instead of buying.

Like last time, we would be aiming to join a camp and help in a practical and meaningful way throughout the week. I hope that this in some way helps to make up for the fact that (being international travelers/visitors) we can't really assist with infrastructure. That and paying dues helps too! A big shout out to our lovely hosts Barbie Death Camp for their hospitality at the 2013 event. Last time we tried to help with anything from morning moop patrols, to ANZAC Biscuit and Frozen Iceblocks, plus some general handy man work.... and lets not forget, stocking up on a decent amount of wine for the infamous "Tour de Franzia!"

Anyways, at this point it is just a shout out to see who else is out there.

Welcome. We have quite a few Australians here abouts. It's a rather slow time of year yet but they'll pop in later. I hope you make it this year.

Hello and welcome! It's probably also worth pointing out that your group faces the same issues as anyone who's flying in and traveling to the event. You could keep the focus on other Aussies, or open up your thinking/planning to all international burners (there have been a few international burner camps in the past), or the serious travelers. Once you form up an actual camp plan you could (and should) post a thread in the Theme Camps & Villages board, you can use it to just post about your plans (maybe have some travel storytelling events or a camp bar) or to recruit additional campmates.

If you're certain you want to keep your focus on Brisbane or Australian burners, you may also want to connect with your regional group. They may have mailing lists, Facebook groups, or even local events year-round where you can connect with others to help work out the logistics of getting halfway around the world.

Good luck, and again - welcome!

Hey ib2m you guys should join the Aussies on the Playa 2016 Facebook group if you're wanting to connect to other folks coming over for the burn, there's also a Burning Man - Brisbane group. And there will almost certainly be a "Straya Day" themed event again this year that you can come along to and meet other Aussies at.
