Google Maps

Post by MikeGyver » Sat Mar 12, 2016 4:37 pm

Looked at Google maps the other day, The route to Black Rock City will not take the 34 from Gerlach. Even going from Gerlach to BRC it goes almost 4 hours north around the mountains. Anyone have an idea why?

I"ve contacted them several times over the years, to try to resolve this. we stop a few people each year, coming from Trego, or Frog Pond, saying Google maps took them this way. They have told me they feel correct, and won't change it. ........I think someone is pranking them.

Must be a "recent" thing; the screenshots from Google Maps I made two years ago show the shorter route.

Maybe they updated their data when there was a wash-out or something. Who knows, maybe the roads are in bad shape right now too.

I just tried it and got the same answer. and even tried forcing the 447/34 route. It would not take me Empire to Gerlach, via 447, nor Gerlach to BRC via 37.

Route from the North is recommending 299 out of Ceaderville to 8A and then 34 to get to the playa. First time I've ever seen it do that without purposefully rerouting.

It's the small area just north of the fork in the road that blocks the route. You can even detour down 34 and back up. Just that little stretch is mined.

We are actually going to trust our Garmin to tell us how to get there. Could be an adventure. Ahhh, the life of living on the edge (never said what edge). :)

just follow any janky hippie bus, overloaded 81 Toyota pickup, or trail of car parts and redbull cans, on any road once you're within 200 miles.

That's exactly how I find my way out of San Francisco. Even yesterday, when it came time to cross the Bay Bridge and go home I drive to the downtown area and follow the cars turning in-mass. Invariably it takes me home.

BTW. I was doing data entry from last years census. Thank you everyone who went online last year and took part in the Census. It's not just interesting. It's important.

Let's say you didn't like a tax that was being levied by Nevada. In response you decided to bring up the amount of money spent in the state. Where would you get the most accurate figure?

What if you disagreed with Nevada politicians trying to restrict kids or increase law enforcement at the event? Where could you find the numbers for your legal argument?

The Census is a valuable tool that helps protect and improve future burns. Please fill one out next time you burn.

Someone else noticed this a couple of weeks ago and posted about it on reddit. Lots of folks htere said they'd seen it and reported it too to no avail.
