pharmo... as in, prescriptions? No can do. Only herbal (and yes, I pronounce it with it's 'h') for this girlie.theCryptofishist wrote:I go straight to pharmo. Have you tried light therapy--or is that gonna get you unwanted attention from the DEA?
I'd do light therapy, but they're so damned expensive.
I heard a rumor about melatonin.... anyone?

what was the rumor you heard?
http://www.melatonin.com/
"Melatonin is the all-natural nightcap. It's secreted by the pineal gland, a pea-size structure at the center of the brain, as our eyes register the fall of darkness." At night melatonin is produced to help our bodies regulate our sleep-wake cycles. The amount of it produced by our body seems to lessen as we get older. Scientists believe this may be why young people have less problem sleeping than older people.
"Studies suggest that... supplements can hasten sleep and ease jet lag, without the hazards or side effects of prescription sleeping pills." It may have many other uses and has been reported to make people feel better, strengthen the immune system, and reduce free radicals in the body. Current research is underway to determine it's effect as an anti-oxidant, immno-modulator in cancer, delayed sleep-phase disorders, and jet lag. Tests are still under way so there is much to still be learned about it and its effects on the human body.

I get the same thing, and melatonin works for me... Haven't tried light therapy, but the active ingredient in sunshine is Vitamin D... sooo, unless you're lactose intolerant, you might try a bunch of milk... Valarian root is vile, but it works too. And what Helitac said about the health food store, especially in Seattle... they could load you up with all kinds of stuff.GuinivereElise wrote:pharmo... as in, prescriptions? No can do. I do prefer melatonin, though. It has the added side benefit of knocking you right off to sleep. DO NOT TAKE IT AT WORK!!! You will pass out at your counter... tough to make sales when you're snoring...

yeah, well, at least if I'm snoring it means I'm not harassing the customer or getting into arguments with them...samtzu wrote:I do prefer melatonin, though. maybe i need to get some of this melatonin shit.
my dad and my x-roomie both used the lights, and swear by them.
i know lots of folks on anti-depressants, too.
but you know, some of the best things you can do are eating and sleeping well, exercising, getting out in whatever daylight there is, and doing things that make your soul produce it's own sunshine. imo.
it really, though depends on how severe it is and how stubborn you are.

Yeah well, I learned the hard way--with expence of some years out of my life, that in this case I'd go with the evils of allopathy. And herbal scares me from some of my experiences--although I was experiementing on myself so I probably deserved it.GuinivereElise wrote:pharmo... as in, prescriptions? No can do. I read a story in The NY Times the other day about a study of babies and light exposure. The upshot was that those babies who had exposure to AFTERNOON light were better sleepers. I know this is impractical for many of us hive bees, but it is cheaper than herbs, lights, etc...
- <i>The study compared babies who slept well with problem sleepers and found that the good sleepers had been exposed to twice as much light between noon and 4 p.m.
. . .
Since increased daytime exposure to light is found to decrease sleep disturbances among the elderly, Dr. Harrison decided to test whether light exposure could be related to sleeping patterns of babies 6 to 12 weeks old.<i>

A couple of times I had to go east, Pennsylvania an West Virginia to work for six months each, gray skies all the time. Being from Colorado it hammered me into the ground. Moved back west to the desert, haven't had near the problems since. Sunshine and blue skies worked for me, just my two pesos.
