We have a small camper with a built-in fridge and freezer that runs off propane, and are wondering whether or not we should consider not using it during the event and just sealing off the vents to keep dust out of the system. It's one of the more expensive parts of little camper and we could probably get by with a cooler and block ice for the duration.
We're wondering what others with RVs and campers do? Should we just use and hope we can clean it out with compressed air and some effort, or just seal it off as best we can and use a cooler. Thanks, everyone!

I've never had trouble with mine, and never heard of trouble. If you are concerned, open the back and blow it out when you get home.

Do you bother with any kind of filter in front of or behind the vents? I'd be concerned it would reduce efficiency. Thanks again.

Yes, use it. A propane fridge is one of the best things you can bring to the Playa. Saves trips to the ice station and reduces the amount of liquid you need to evaporate. We brought a small propane fridge from a house boat last year. Just set it out with a propane bottle and a car battery. Worked so nice all week.
Another thing we did last year that worked great is brining extra deep cycle marine batteries to run our camp lighting (12v LED strips). They charged during the day off the genny, then gave us a nice, quiet, well lit camp at night. Future plans include adding solar so we can limit our genny use to a minimum.

The propane fridge is sooooooo much nicer than a cooler. Never had any problems with dust in the fridge. Bring frozen treats for your new friends.

And don't even try to pre/post filter anything in the heat-exchange circuit. At best you kill efficiency, at worst you burn your camper and half of BRC to the ground.
They work great, are usually static system with no fans, moving parts, and blow out real well with compressed air when you get home.

Ours does have a thermostatic-controlled fan, basically a computer fan. We will follow your advice, not try to add any filtration, and to blow it out afterward.

I just tape a H-Vac filter over the refridgerator vent on my RV. It lets the air circulate and keeps out the dust. I hit the compartment with the air hose on clean up for anything that gets in.
