2 questions. pvc hut with shorter ribs / 10x10 canopy modification

Post by obeyjon » Thu Apr 21, 2016 10:01 pm

2 questions! thank you for any advice ahead of time.

Has anyone tried building one of the pvc huts but with maybe 5 foot sections of pvc on each side, joined with a connector?
I would love use the galaxy hut design but I'm not sure how I can fit 10 foot pipes on or in my car. On top of that theres the issue of where I store them the rest of the year inside my small apartment.

My other question is about those 10x10 canopies. I've read enough online to know that people think they're risky. Is that risk mostly if they're set up as is? Surely there must be a way to make it work? Has anyone tried reinforcing the legs? If I secure it to the ground and expand the shade with tarps, will it really be that unstable?

Thanks!

Yes. There are pages of conversations about cutting the monkey hut pvc to 5' lengths and
connecting with sleeves. It works well.
As for the 10x10, are you talking about a pop up quick shade?
My advice is don't do it. I took one in 2014 with an aluminet top...staked, guyed,
rigged it to death, reinforced the legs and had absolutely no problem with it.
Took the same set up in 2015 and it went tits up almost instantly. I am upgrading to
a 10x10 flat top metal conduit structure this year.
I have seen another eplayan use the frame of a quickshade as center support for a
large netting shade tarp, but IIRC the netting just rested on top of it and was securely
attached to something sturdier.

thanks for the advice. I found some of the posts about joining 5' pieces, that seems more realistic for my needs.

Plus a 10ft half-circumference monkey hut will only give you a 6ft wide base, and 3ft height. That's like a crawl-space and probably won't shield you enough from the heat that radiates from the surface of the tarp.
