Really!? Fuck. His writing on Burning Man were some of the first I'd come across on the Web, and instrumental in researching when I finally decided to go. He and Brad Templeton were invaluable resources. Damn. Now I'm doubly sad. Prince, FUCK. MAJOR, MAJOR loss.

I don't think he considered me a useless waste of air, but you never know. I drove him crazy on FB with my constant Bernie Sanders rants. I am pretty sure he blocked my posts, but I still saw his. And I totally agree with you about knowing what he was talking about.

To be fair to the man, I don't recall him ever actually telling me I was a useless waste of air. I don't recall him ever directly saying anything derogatory to me.
He just had an abrasive way about him that didn't make you think you'd be getting a Christmas card from him.
He probably would have made a few of the current crop of new eplayans cry.
But he'd have set them straight.

Half my life has been spent as a professional writer, yet at times like these I always find myself at a loss for words and often say nothing. Yet for Bob I must dig deep and give it my best try.

I would like to treat you to a related story. At my first Eplaya Meet & Greet, I filled out my name tag as Drawingablank with Bob written underneath it. Most of the people who read it wanted to know if I was "the Bob" or the Couch - and quite saddened when I told them no. I would have been thrilled to meet him myself, but sadly that never happened in person.

The couch was highly influential in me becoming the Eplayan and even the burner I am today. Giving massive help to all yet being unwilling to spoon feed those looking for a care bear made many think him obnoxious or callous, but I found it endearing and the epitome of burner behavior.

I will miss you Bob

Bob was a good burner, a great architect, and a respectful man. He was one of the strong souls of DPW, and you knew he didn't give two shits what you thought of him. I had the honor to work with him in 2001. He respected my art, and was always pleasant to me in his own crunchy way.
He will be missed.

It's been quite a rough week. One of the world's most prolific artists (and one of the best guitarists I've ever seen or heard play) in Prince, one of the world's great culture-jammers in Pastor Rick (who jammed it up til the bitter end, passing away on his birthday), an old school guitar hero in Lonnie Mack, and one of the world's greatest curmudgeons with Bob. Bob wasn't just a grumpy old man or crotchety and jaded burner... to me he embodied what being a burner is all about. He had a lot of strong opinions, and he'd be the first to tell you you're doing it wrong (as he often was), but he'd immediately follow it up with helpful suggestions and solutions. He had a wealth of knowledge, information, and experience, and he shared it pretty freely. He hadn't been on ePlaya in a few years, and I don't think he'd graced the playa for even longer. Yet he leaves an indelible mark on the event - not just with his potato trap site (one of the first places I found information about shelters for the desert), but in the design of Center Camp... one of the most iconic structures of the event.

With regards to Bob, within the past month he sent to me maybe a hundred hours worth of A Prairie Home Companion tapes that a new camp within Barbie Death Village "A Playa Home Companion" will be playing throughout the week. This will be our send off to Bob Stahl: Your memory and generosity will live on. Rest in peace my friend, you are not forgotten.

I never was into Prince music when he really popular in the mid/late 80s but I've been into his music in the last several months.
57 is rather young these days. I'm gonna be 57 at the end of this month.
