Re: Where Are You Volunteering in 2016..... ?
illy,
I have met a Blaze (from CA) whose volunteer title is Airport Mayor (points out the camping spots to new arrivals). And, I have met a Heidi (from PA) who volunteered at the airport in (2014) and has not attended since.
I am not sure if we are talking about the same folks. Probably the same Mayor, but probably not the same Heidi.

With the ice. Some of the best times I had last year was spent putting in shifts in the back of the trucks alongside a great bunch of people.

Kitty-
I guess you made it through the fire scheduling software today, then. I got my five shifts into the system and am wait listed for a couple more. I go out pre-burn week and stay post-burn, so they are spread out pretty well.

My husband is the firefighter. But, yeah, he got his shifts in. Our playa time is shorter this year, only 1 day pre and 1 day post event, so not as spread out, but still good timing I think.Molotov wrote:Kitty-

I plan on working logistics, again, and plans, for the first time. Logistics is waiting on my FEMA certs, and plans is not scheduling yet. But soon hopefully. I put ESD-Fire because I usually work at Fire Camp, and I don't do medical.

Hi AnnVader, (Please ignore any drunken emails supposedly sent by me. ) I've Greeted for many years. What exactly would you like to know? 4 hour shifts, work in pairs. Two greeters in each lane handing out the book, sticker etc. It they choose to get out of their car there is hugging. Welcoming virgins with your own twist on the bell ringing and dust angel making. Lots of last minute education. Seatbelts, lights, no alcohol, 5 MPH, nothing obscuring license plates.
If you go to your burner profile and check greeter on the volunteer list you will get a letter explaining everything Greeter. They are the most transparent dept. Very well run.

Thanks, Ratty! I'm already registered - got my letter - and will certainly sign up for my shifts as soon as I can. Since I'm doing setup, I'll get to greet when the event opens.Ratty wrote:Hi AnnVader, (Please ignore any drunken emails supposedly sent by me. ) I've Greeted for many years. Zig-Zag the Greeter congrats. You'll love it. When the shift board goes live for you to sign up, pick the time of day that you can be in costume and cheerful. If you choose night shifts wear extra lighting and then some more on your back. Light yourself up like a friggin lighthouse and still stay out of the lane when they're coming at you. You'll have a ball and want more.

Is there some strategy for which day/time to pull a greeter shift? I would love to do it Sunday but I would imagine those shifts are very desirable and there is a the matter of figuring how to get in early enough to set up camp and make back to Gate.

Re: Where Are You Volunteering in 2016..... ?
I greeted for several shifts last year, hands down my favorite was Monday 12-4. Monday morning-ish seemed to be when a lot of people travelling from WAY far away (Germany, Scotland, Estonia) finally made it - people who have been travelling to the Burn for +24 hours in planes and automobiles are SUPER happy when they finally get thereLeap wrote:Is there some strategy for which day/time to pull a greeter shift? My strategy was to think generally about what times of day I was likely to be asleep/altered/preoccupied and then pick some greeter slots that weren't in those times. Also, some shifts are costume shifts, you might really be drawn to superheroes, bunnies, or the naked shift (true). But as with many things Burn, your "best guess" about how your days will flow might be inspired, manageable, or flat-out wrong. Pick some shifts that don't conflict with your camp commitments and go from there, don't overthink it too too much!

Re: Where Are You Volunteering in 2016..... ?
Barbie Death Village has volunteered again to do the 8 p.m. to midnight shift on Tuesday. Everyone is welcome to join in on the shenanigans. Afterwards we will have a midnight taco feed back at camp. I'd say I'd be there to help with the greeters, but I have plans. Not sure what they are exactly, but drinking absinthe, luring the sirens of BRC back to my RV, and being generally obnoxious probably are near the top of the list.
Re: Where Are You Volunteering in 2016..... ?
I just signed up for some Census shifts. Got my lab coat and hot pink decor. It's exciting. (Shhhhh. don't tell the Greeters.) I've got my pre-event and post event figured out but my burn week is still a blank. Double Wow! Maybe I really will see some art and stay up late with the grownups.
