RV Advice for first-timers from Houston USA and Liverpool UK

Post by Mason1985 » Tue Apr 26, 2016 5:18 am

So, it's real.

After years of watching videos, hearing tales and promising ourselves it would become a reality - it finally has.

I re-located to Houston a few years back with work and will be gracing 'La Playa' with my buddy from my hometown of Liverpool.

At the present time we are trying to co-ordinate the logistics - where can we meet initially (he will be flying direct from UK, me from Houston). Where can we get a reasonable RV? What is our drive time? If anyone can provide any initial answers to these questions would be a great help to us.

I guess i'll see 'ya'll' soon....

Getting a reasonable rental RV anywhere near BRC probably isn't going to happen.
If I were you I'd look closer to home and drive in.

Hi Mason1985! Alas, Captain Goddammit is right . . . RVs in the logical places (SF and Reno) are usually all booked up soon after the previous year's Burn. Maybe Vegas or Sacramento or Salt Lake City would have something . . . hard to say.

Google Maps can give you the drive time, but add a few hours--you're not likely to be going 60mph, and then there's the epic line to get in . . .

haha this is going to be one fun adventure.

Always the way - watch the videos and think you're ready for it and then realize the up hill battle just for preparation!

I'm sure it will all be worth it once i'm there!

So what you're trying to say is: you haven't given this preparation thing any thought at all.

Yeah .. you should probably get going on that. Big statements and expectations aren't a form of preparation and you only have about 4 months before you leave.

Forums are nice for general advice. For planning critical logistics, however, that's your problem. What RV you should rent? The one that you can afford, but also drive to and from the playa + cleanup in your vacation time. Where is that RV? Go find one!

Hello,
It's also my first Burning Man, any interest in joining teams to find a RV? I'm 1 friend also and we've started searching but most sleep 4-8 so wanted to find people to share with. Let me know, and I can tell you what I've found so far. :)
Also, Are you with a camp? I've a camp already but could see if there's space left....
Dawn :P

There is a big difference between what an RV "can" sleep and what it can sleep comfortably.

A typical RV will have one full size/queen bed and then convert the sofa and dinette into beds. These beds can be cramped, a bit lumpy and basically in the way. The two people sleeping on the master bed will be a lot more comfortable than two adults crammed into the dinette.

If you plan on using the RV to cook in having someone sleeping in the dinette and sofa can also be a pain.

The 28' RV we rented is rated to sleep 6. We went out to check it out and take some measurements for storage.

NO WAY in heck, would I put more than 3 people in that tin can. There is just no room to move around in it once you get a couple of people in it. Seems to me a week of close quarter drills, in an RV, will test anyone's mettle. If you are used to having some space around you, then you might want to reconsider cramming the rated number of people into that RV.
