Solar powered LED string lights - reviews

Post by vaktel » Tue May 31, 2016 5:05 pm

I'm looking for some feedback on lights that are similar to this:

If you have ever used them on the playa, did they work all night? Any reportable issues? Or are they simply amazing? Thanks, burners :) I've relied on all sorts of battery powered thingamajigs in the past, and I'm honestly not sure why I didn't think solar for my light strings before this.

P.S. I searched for relevant threads and didn't find anything answering my question, but please send me a link if you have one in mind.

I bought the Harbor Freight LED in a tube solar strings, but changed out the internal rechargeable AA battery for one with a large capacity which usually keeps them lit all night-they turn on/off automatically. I mount them on the shade structure and put the solar cells on the top in view of the sun. I would put them outside at home for a week or so before leaving to give them a good charge and test for any dead spots (they're cheap-shit happens)

They are fine for some limited purposes. The light is not super bright, but will usually last all night long. They will be visible as you walk home toward your camp, and will provide a mild, ambient light to your immediate surroundings, enough so that you will not need to light a lantern during the night to fill your pee jug. They are cheap, and I find that roughly half fail after one season (and often, one is broken before you even get there).

The colored lights provide less illumination, so get at least one strand of white for brightness, and decorate with other colors if you want an effect.
