Burner Air Express -- 2016
There will be a Burner Air Express this year that will also be in operation Saturday pre-event?
There is a Burner Air Express link on the Burner Express web page, but the link is not yet active and I do not know all the details.
https://burnerexpress.burningman.org/
What I do know is that they will be using 30 passenger Dash 8's with the intent of lowering the cost of flights from SF, RNO & S-CA and reducing the number vehicles entering BRC.
If you are flying into either of these three areas, it would be nice to also fly the remainder of you trip directly into BRC.
I suspect with the limited number of available seats and the reduced price that these seats will fill quickly.
I know nothing else. If you are interested, You might wish to keep checking the Burner Express web page for details.

This will be a great way for the parasite observer class to use their money to fulfill their bucket list wishes! For all those Sherpa camp customers who show up with nothing but expectations, they can now more easily avoid standing in line with the plebes. Woo-hoo! So if YOU are a worthless person with a ticket and absolutely no self-reliance, if you have nothing to offer the community and simply want to use your techbro wealth to avoid the line, if you are coming to Burning Man to look at nekkid boobies and network with your fellow parasites, Burner Air Express is made just for YOU! The rest of us who build art and camps, who provide food and shade and drinks and experiences, those of us who contribute something to the event will be in line below you, waiting it out. But thanks for removing a few cars from the line.

That's a bit harsh. I flew in myself my first burn. It's actually not that expensive.

Re: Burner Air Express -- 2016
Chowski,
Those rich folk that you speak of will still be arriving via the small charters (6-12 passengers - 2,300 last year) like they always have.
I have been advised that Burner Air Express will be much less expensive than the same old - same old small charters that will still be serving those who do not wish to ride in an airplane-bus and it is expected that this will remove another 3,000 - 5,000 folks from the long line in front of you. You should be celebrating.
Some have suggested that most of the folks who take advantage of this reduced rate & bulk human air transporters will be folks flying commercial into SF, RNO and S-CA from around the world and who will be carrying their camp on their back.
Like many things in the world, not everything is for everyone and so it is at Burning Man. Me? I am arriving in my pickup truck pulling my little 13' long mini-trailer. And for this, I am very grateful.
Hint: If you were to volunteer at some "official" venue for a Sunday slot, you would most probably receive an early entry pass for Saturday and avoid the line all together.

If the rates are affordable, I would spend a little more to arrive by air than by bus. I am a big aviation geek and would squirm in my seat as BRC came into view. I do wish I saw that link before buy the bus tickets. The Ts an Cs seem pretty rigid but I wonder if they will let me change it to air, if the price is right.

Re: Burner Air Express -- 2016
Leap,
There are two different operations & venders in play here.
Since we are this far out, it would not hurt to check to see if you can get a refund.
(1) Prices have not been set and (2) Flight schedules have not been set. Well, they might have already been set, but they have not yet been advertised. Keep checking the Burner Express web page for the details.
You might wish to see how this shakes out before you ask for a refund. Man it would suck, if you could not make air arrangements and Burner Express sold out under you.

Re: Burner Air Express -- 2016
Seems like too much of an easy button to me. Wheres the effort of going in with friends to remodel a bus to make the journey, experiencing the white knuckled roller coaster ride down I-80 in to Salt Lake, the stress of wondering if the engine light that just came on in your 12 year old minivan is important or not. Not to mention the sleep deprivation of trying to drive 2,000 miles in 3 days. They never get to experience the thrill of cooking the brakes on your overheating suburban at 9,000 feet in Wyoming. I actually feel a little sad for them. They just don't know what their missing out on.
Oh well. To each their own. You won't catch me saying you're Burning it wrong (I may think it but......)

I don't agree with your assertion that everyone flying in is some rich bastard throwing money around & not contributing to the event in any useful way. I'm sure some of them may be that, but I also think for some folks its just the best way for them to get to the burn for their particular situation, While I do share your disdain for someone that is simply there to gawk, has no clue or care for the "principals", and generally contributes nothing to the event. I like to give people the benefit of doubt until they prove themselves to be a complete DBs.Chowski wrote:This will be a great way for the parasite observer class to use their money to fulfill their bucket list wishes! And if it takes 1 or 2 rented luxury RVs off the highway during exodus I'm even more in favor of it. I thought I was going to witness several fatal head-on collisions during exodus last year when the RVs would pull out & pass in blind no passing zones. It scared the crap out of me.

Re: Burner Air Express -- 2016
I have a friend who flew in on one of those expensive charters a few years ago - she was camped with us, she had a gig she couldn't get out of that occured during the period we were travelling up, and she could afford to do it. So she did - and said it was one of the most amazing ways she had ever entered BRC (almost up there with hearing the excited squeals of an RV full of newbies as they first see the lights of the city, since this time she got to relive that experience).
I've got nothing against transport that gets vehicles off the road, and there's a lot of hard-core long-term Burners that can both afford it and might have the need for it. Personally I've been hoping to fly my boyfriend in for a couple of days for years now - there's no way in hell he'd want to go to the whole event, but 2 days? Very doable, and this service, if it's priced right, would work for that. If, of course, I could find him a ticket.

You might get him one of the 500 bus tickets and send him home on the plane.Eric wrote:I have a friend who flew in on one of those expensive charters a few years ago - she was camped with us, she had a gig she couldn't get out of that occured during the period we were travelling up, and she could afford to do it. I have worked gate at the airport. Sure a few epalyans have worked airport, road gate and GPE!
More arrivals and departures by air is super A-OK.
And to assure all epalyans, air arrivals are subject to every and all TSA level beyond 'fun'damental search!
So any new shuttle arrivals be prepared! We will look every where!!!!

Re: Burner Air Express -- 2016
He's not going to sit on a bus for 10-12 hours to meet me there (I'm always part of our early set-up crew), which is why the flight would work best for him (he's also very shy - a bus full of chatty strangers would be his nightmare). It can't happen this year anyway, we have time to plan for the future.Ulisse wrote:You might get him one of the 500 bus tickets and send him home on the plane.

Re: Burner Air Express -- 2016
It shouldn't be a hard concept to understand that not everyone's value is measured by their ability to put in labor on-playa. Some people build or do nothing, but their mere presence is value enough for someone else to compensate as needed.
It should also not be hard to understand that time is often worth more than money, and that quite frankly it is utterly ridiculous and supremely inane to whine about spending/wasting money in the context of a week-long vacation such as this.
And finally, it shouldn't be a hard concept to understand that people burn differently, and that you should concentrate on getting what you want out of your burn, not forcing what you value on someone else's.
