about being over 40 years old...

as a youngster, i grew up with the "never trust anyone over 30" then i turned 30.... and felt lucky to have gotten there...
then 40 came around, and my lawyer friend told me... "you are half way there, relax and enjoy yourself, 'cause being angst-ridden is no way to live:
and now as i am a little over 2 years from 50... i wish i could take back some of the dumb shit i said from 18-until now...
and yeah, i deserve some respect, just for not getting myself killed by doing some of the dumb shit i did in my youth... and not for getting anyone else killed along the way.
and you know, amazingly enough, i believe i helped a few people with their lives along the way...
so if you wonder why older people expect some respect... it is because they have learned some vauable lessons along the way, that aren't quite evident to the young. (this i know from my own personal experience)
so, before anyone goes ranting about older people, just remember, if you are lucky, you too, might live to a ripe old age.... and expect some respect for that accomplishment alone.
ps. yes, i believe there are old foolish people too.

I disagree with Joel... Respect is earned on a person by person basis. You can't put on a badge or insignia (like baggy skin and grey hair) and expect people to respect you. I sure as hell don't respect my age group just because they are my age group, but I do respect certain individuals because they have the wisdom and knowledge that has come with careful learning over the years. Age does not qualify one for Instan Respect.
On the other hand, if you disrespect me ("Dis me", for those who don't understand standard English), I have the option of ignoring you or kicking your ass over the nearest small building, or instructing you. However, the last option is reserved for people that I respect, or who I feel may be worthy of my respect some day. Otherwise... they can just fuck off (I had to put a fuck in here somewhere).
BTW, I respect Joel very much, because I've seen his wisdom, and I know that he has earned respect here on the boards... and he is a world class ceramicist (a guy that makes ceramics).
