Da Vinci Flying Machine
Here's my Da Vinci Flying Machine for Burning Man. Da Vinci was wrong, there is enough human power to fly with modern materials and designs. I figure about 20 minutes of flight time.

Pull it off and become a playa legend!
FUCK YOU, I'M A WIZARD. FUCK YOU, I'M A SHARK.

Quite a lot of information is available. For example...

That's one word I regret googling during breakfast.
.
Video games are giving kids unrealistic expectations on how many swords they can carry.
.
, but don't harm the red dragon that frequents the area from time to time. He and I have an agreement.

Re: Da Vinci Flying Machine
Version 2 is coming along. It's going to be about half scale so kids or small adults can fly it. It has a copper propeller shaft. The fuslage and wing fabric is from a 12' patio umbrella. The wings and tail are bamboo. About 20 foot wingspan.

Re: Da Vinci Flying Machine
Do you figure a person to have enough power to get this off the ground?
Or is it going to "fly" around on four wheels?
Get a quick tow from an outbound plane...Dude better have one hell of a breakfast.

Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

Version 3 is evolving. Hope to get some inspiration from the DaVinci Show here in Cincinnati at the Museum Center. The fuslage will be made from one inch diameter ash. The axel and wing shaft from one inch copper. The wings and tail from bamboo. Estimated takoff speed of 25 knots with a 90 pound twelve year old girl.

Re: Da Vinci Flying Machine
Do you mean solid 1" copper rod? That's mighty heavy stuff. You might consider tubing, which is almost as strong for your purpose.
(By the way, thanks for the donation to build our bicycle parts inventory!)

Re: Da Vinci Flying Machine
Hey all, and Elliot for your encouragement!
It's hollow copper tubing! I've purchased every 1" copper T for miles around!
Here’s the latest photo. The first wing spar is installed! The seat webbing is just threaded in for looks at the moment. Very excited about the progress. Also, I’m building a swamp cooler like I don’t have a real job. But I did get a 100 watt solar panel borrowed. Thanks again for your efforts and I look forward to driving out. My sister Susan and I have volunteered to patrol the springs Saturday morning with the Earth Guardians. It’s all coming together! let me know if there is anything I can help with. Our bicycle lights have come in.

More progress, feathers cut to length, nose shaped and tail feather shafts in place.
Purchased my 30 gal trash can for the swamp cooler.
Looking forward to bringing all kinds of tasty camp food.

Re: Da Vinci Flying Machine
Hi Fellow Burners,
Slowly making progress since my wing design needed to be revised. Here is the last set of three views until I need to take her apart and work on bolting the fuselage, cutting the fabric, sewing the seat webbing and making the wing shaft work more smoothly.

On the swamp cooler front, I found a trash bin at a recycling store to cut down for the outside bucket and found some 10" duct mounting fittings at another recycling store! The fabric, fan and dimmers should be in next week. Going to check out the setup at the glider field tomorrow where the Shark Manor is living.
Packing doing well also. Ordered some from Patagonia, Aidells chicken pineapple teriyaki meatballs, canned meat from http://www.werlingandsons.com/. The local Meijer's has dry ice, our last stop before leaving town to get the Shark Manor.

Re: Da Vinci Flying Machine
Swamp Cooler Success! Got my 80 watt 10" fan in today and had purchased a bildge pump earlier. And I got a dimmer switch for reducing the pump flow. Everything working great. Started test at 9 pm at 50% pump power. Reduced it to 25% of it's 3.5 amps capacity. The fan will need to be full power. It a nice flow but not too strong. Two battery monitors on the battery and I'm getting 12.2 volts and an OK light from another and it's 9:30 pm.

Awesome! Whereabouts will you be showing this creation? Do you have time and days in mind? My crew would love to see it!

The Ornithopter has gotta be the best idea this year... that's the first thing that popped in my head when I heard the theme...
I just didn't have the funds to pull it off... seriously if the Burn was a month later I might have had the ability...
I wonder how many there will be haha... hope some of them have flame throwers haha
