Socially awkward extrovert

Post by Rocket pup » Thu Jun 09, 2016 12:31 pm

Hello,
I was persuaded to post in this bit so i am posting in this bit.
My friend and i are coming over from Australia. He has been to BM a few years ago. I have never been. OOOOhhhhhh.
We are doing SF Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Yellowstone and Salt Lake City also.
Quite possibly packing too much into one holiday but sod it :)
I have wanted to come to BM for many years now. I never thought i would get round to doing it but I have. I will be bursting into tears as soon as i get there, im sure.
Just the thought of being surrounded by 74999 other lovely weirdos means that it is much more than an expensive camping trip in the desert for me.
I will be doing what I can for the community and keeping my sparklometer reading low. Djembe jams/lesson. Random acts of kindness all over the place. Piggy back taxi has just come to mind. I like the idea of that.
So i am a rather introverted musician. I have fallen in love with the creative musical composing possibilities the IPad has. I am not a DJ and would not have a polished performance for hundreds of people. I will be looking for a cosy little camp somewhere that i can feel comfortable to plug my IPad in and give the small crowd 15-30mins of chilled out improvised music. Not sure if that is a possibility what with the amount of DJ's I hear go every year.
I love the idea of stepping out from BRC onto no mans land. Is that possible/allowed?
Anyways.

All my love to all of you and i will see you in a couple of months.

I like how you put Salt Lake City in a list of national parks.

You can't leave the event area except through the gate and the BLM and there's a big exclusion zone around the event to prevent people from trying to sneak in. You can, however, always spend some time out in deep playa where you'll often be isolated from people. It's a big place. Bring and use lights if you do that at night, lest someone run you over.

Welcome Rocket Pup. A lot of people break down and cry at the Greeter station. (No. Not really.) It's such a relief to finally arrive.

Be warned that the playa dust is as fine as talc. Your ipad may never be the same. At the very least, a zip-lock bag is called for.

Come on iPad. I know you want to go and I am sure you will behave yourself. Can iPads get COPD? You are going to have to go in a dustproof case and a ziplock bag. Sorry about that. And you're only coming out at night when there's no wind.
No mans land within the confines yes. Can't wait. I'll be taking a djembe and chair out there for sure.
Definitely taking my clothes off. Not many opportunities to go naked in cities.
I'm almost incapable of staying on track with all this organising malarkey. ADHD TLA WTF. I never finish anything. The only thing that gets me back on track is watching BM youtubes and having inspirational cryings.

At night when there's no wind?
Oh boy... there's gonna be a learning curve.

I wouldn't want to go to Burning Man without a massive learning curve :)
I'm quite a hardy creature. I thought the nights were supposed to be fairly still. Got that wrong by the sounds of it!

Info to any newbies looking at this post - there may be dust storms and such at night also

ALL OF THEM!

You might be able to plug in your iPad and play your music somewhere. It might also get irretrievably filled with dust, but yeah, bring a gallon slider bag and hook it up if you find a willing bar. I've known camps that alternated between their various campers' devices to provide hours of music. Put a sticker with your name, nickname, email, camp name/address and cell number on it, and don't forget it or let it far out of your sight. In general: Bring stickers and sharpies. Tuck a business card with your camp name & addy in your phone case. LABEL ALL YOUR CRITICAL STUFF: Bikes, phones, cameras, devices, Bags of Wandering, & maybe any nice playa coat deserves a name tag. And lock your bike to itself (at minimum) always.

Some help for the socially awkward is available pinned to the top of the Q&A Forum under "Tips for Shy People at Burning Man". I'd copy the link here for you, but my browser is about to crash.

Welcome, Rocket pup!

Many thanks.
Definitely not shy. I intend to take my clothes off!
Just rather awkward in social situations.
