The trip will take about

12,000 miles.

Please do not post rental companies or rates on this board - those posts may be removed.

@Paperman - seriously? It's a great big internet out there, filled with search engines and free-to-use mapping sites, so you can figure that crap out for yourself. Figure out the distance one way, double it, and then pad it by as many miles as you think you may need for stops along the way. Since you're planning a budget, it's best to err on the side of a bigger number (better to turn out to cost less than to get hit with an unplanned expense at the end of the trip). Radical self reliance (one of Burning Man's principles) means discovering and exploring your inner resources and figuring out the answers for yourself... you and your campmates know your needs better than anybody else anyways.

I rented a Penske a few years ago out of Orange County. I started off in the morning driving North. About Sacramento, I turned on the lights. No lights. They have mobile service, which notched several hours out of my trip. It was a fuse. It would have been cheaper for Penske to check the vehicle for that before renting, and cheaper for me time-wise to have checked every light, horn, climate control etc. when I picked up.

I'm sorry for being ill-informed in advance.

I'm a virgin burner looking to rent a truck or van along with a buddy of mine and running into the usual problems.

I noticed that there are some people talking about Penske rental charging nothing for mileage.
Would someone please throw some light on this? I checked their website and they want to charge $0.89/mile after the $700 charge.

Any information would be highly appreciated :).

Where are you looking to rent out of? There is a dealership in Sacramento (not Penske) that is burner-friendly. PM me if you want further info.

I have rented a cargo van from Enterprise the last 3 years with no mileage fees and no cleaning charges, but I hear that going forward you will need to rent from the truck rents, site rather than from the car rental site.

I rented a cargo van from E.......... back in April and got a good deal. I went out yesterday to confirm it and all is good, I measured the back (its a Ford Transit, not the Chevy they showed on line) and I can fit the 10 foot EMTs and PVCs in there no problem.

It looks big, but I am keenly aware of how quickly it will fill up. throw in the odd shaped items like a bike and a ladder. A couple of big coolers, bunch of water containers and bam, it will be full. I wonder if I should build a rack in there to keep stuff organized? Sounds like a lot of extra weight to haul around.

Try to organize the packing so that there is a platform at least 30" wide and 6' long.

That way you'll have a place to put a sleeping bag for napping along the way!!!

If you're handy and have the time, building a rack is a good idea. We bought plastic shelving from Home Depot (which we also use in the camp, primarily for the kitchen) and line one side of the truck with them. You can get a lot more packed and it is way easier to organize and unpack. We've gotten a lot of compliments at gate about how the truck is loaded and it makes the inspection a lot easier for them too.

Somebody tried to email me thru the Eplaya and the message was dropped. Something about three people looking for a van or some such thing. Please send me an email to [email protected] and I will help you out.
