Picking up something flat repeatedly, reducing dust
Picking up something flat repeatedly, reducing dust
I've got something like a 5gal bucket, but taller. I plan to have people pick it up and set it down repeatedly, quickly, as part of a game. I'm thinking that if I give it feet, rather than let the whole base of the bucket touch the ground, then it will kick up less dust. I'd appreciate feedback on this idea from anyone who has tried something similar before.

You are seriously overthinking your bucket of ball-chain.
Bring some plywood.

Where are you camped? Picking up a bucket sounds like fun.

You could try just kicking it.

naw... tell them to try to make dust with the bucket and judge them on their choice. Kicking, lifting, etc.Captain Goddammit wrote:You could try just kicking it.

I'm just thinking that instead of picking up a bucket and putting it down for sport, you may want to try something like naked Twister games. It would possibly be more popular.
Re: Picking up something flat repeatedly, reducing dust
It's no naked Twister, but I assure you this game is fun enough and will be sufficiently popular to be worth my effort in making it.Sham wrote:I'm just thinking that instead of picking up a bucket and putting it down for sport, you may want to try something like naked Twister games. 4-6x scale version I took to the Vermont regional:

My plan for BM is to scale it up 4-6x again, 1ft balls in 4ft tall tubes.

Re: Picking up something flat repeatedly, reducing dust
I was afraid this would increase the amount of dust, as the surface collected dust from the wind during non-playing times. Does a rug by itself reduce dust kick-up?eldergeekaz wrote:Maybe just lay down a tarp, rug, carpet, plywood and call it a day.....

Re: Picking up something flat repeatedly, reducing dust
I'm going to give this a nudge to the Q&A board, since it seems like this is a general question about a playa project and that's a better fit.
If the video is of the game in question, you'll probably want to play that in some sort of sheltered space - it wouldn't take that strong of a gust for the tubes or the balls to blow over or away. Inside your sheltered space though, you could probably just use a small piece of plywood. Check with lumber yards or a big box hardware joint, they may have off-cuts of a couple feet squared that you can get for a few bucks, and they can probably cut a bigger piece down to size for you. That'll keep dust at bay and insure a flat surface so players can put the tubes down without them tipping over.
The game does look interesting, good luck sorting out the logistics and getting it going!

Re: Picking up something flat repeatedly, reducing dust
To reiterate: the footprint of my tubes will be similar to a 5gal bucket, with 1ft balls and 4ft tall tubes. The video is the original tiny tabletop game; this version will be much larger.trilobyte wrote:If the video is of the game in question, you'll probably want to play that in some sort of sheltered space - it wouldn't take that strong of a gust for the tubes or the balls to blow over or away. What Trilo said. Last year on the day before the gates opened the porta pottys on the entrance road blew over. (Nobody was inside.)

Re: Picking up something flat repeatedly, reducing dust
Ah, sorry I missed that. You'd definitely want to play that in a sheltered space. I'll also echo the rug idea. The Home Despots and other big box hardware joints of the world usually have a 6x8' really thin rug on offer for under $20, they do a great job with dust abatement. We have a couple we use around camp, and anchor them down with a nail spike into the corner of the rug.
Re: Picking up something flat repeatedly, reducing dust
Thanks all, sounds like a rug is the way to go, and maybe something to divert the wind.

If you can find a rug made of recycled soda pop bottles, they are soft, lightweight, and clean up easily. We bring a small broom to sweep our rugs on playa.
