I remember about a year ago I had a conversation over lunch at work where I sort of described how Burning man is the end and start of my year. Yesterday this same person asked me if I was going this year. I said yes, and she went on to say that she "would never go" since she really doesn't agree with the spirituality of the burning of an effigy cleansing the old year, that it offends her religious position. "But I'm not judging!" I was sort of taken aback, since I was expecting the drug/nudity or even heat/dirt argument. I put it in the "haven't heard that one yet" file and said, "It's nowhere near that serious."
”On second thought, Let’s not go to Camelot. It’s a silly place.”
Roll on through, Tumbleweed.

I was talking with a client at the massage studio I work in, she's always wanted to burn and was asking REALLY good questions. Another client, from the waiting room couch, said:

"I would never go back. It was more pure of intention in 2006, when I went."

Good. We don't want you there, anyway.
BURN SHIT!

My co-workers are supportive of my going, and even mention knowing someone else who goes every year. They're older than I am and have families and stuff, and aren't really the kind who would attend such an event, but they listen to my descriptions with amusement and without dismissal. Usually if I talk about the event I'll just describe the scale of it, and the ridiculous effort people put into bringing something like that to such an inhospitable place. Also that while hippies sometimes infest the place, that it isn't a "hippie event" despite my own preconceptions before I attended.

Oh right, but who is assigning spirituality here?

"I just can't agree with the spirituality of keeping a decorated tree in one's house to celebrate the birth of a religious figure. It offends my religious position."

"I just can't agree with the spirituality of watching a glittery ball descend in Times Square on New Years Eve. It offends my religious position."

"I just can't agree with the spirituality of dipping hard-boiled eggs in food coloring to celebrate the resurrection of some religious figure. It offends my religious position."
"The essence of tyranny is not iron law. It is capricious law." -- Christopher Hitchens

I have a job interview on August 19th. It's not unlikely that I'll have to bring up my upcoming Burning Man plans, if the interview goes well and we end on the "what are the next steps?" question. I feel like "I'm going camping near Lake Tahoe" is probably the explanation that I'll actually go with.

In other news, my 72 year old mom who lives in SE Ohio just looked up "the Burning Man" on "the googles" for the first time about a month ago. She says to me "I want to tell you to have fun but I can't actually figure out what you're going to be doing there!"
