Double Wide Monkey Hut ??

Post by TittyBoy » Fri Aug 19, 2016 9:47 am

Thoughts on building a MH with 2 spines?

I have all the material from last year's MH; but I want something a slightly wider (I parked my Jeep under the MH, and sleep in the Jeep) but had a little trouble getting out of the side doors.

So, my thought this year, is to add a second spine, maybe 3-4ft btwn the spines -- I don't need even that much extra room.
Goal here is to minimize the amount of new material that I need to purchase.

Thoughts?

There's something else missing from your plan here. How will adding a spine make the monkeyhut bigger? What else did you have in mind?

Two spines could work but you must ensure all ribs maintain an arc and are under constant tension.
PVC pipe under tension is what makes it work.

With 2 spines you will have no "apex" spine so some sag may mess up the tarp down-force.

I'd also look at having three spines, like a:

10' - spine - 5' - spine - 5' - spine - 10'

Or you can cut a side door to match your Jeep door - jus' tossing ideas.

My plan was to add a 2nd spine, and connect the first and second spine (with a 3 smaller section (single pipe cut into 3' sections)), Thus extending the radius of the arc.

Granted the are is no longer as smooth as the original arc -- and therefore the question -- Using the same 10x30 tarp -- which no longer will be setting flush with the ground -- it would be raised up a little higher on both side. Will the hut stand?

It could. All depends on how experienced you are with rigging.

I doubt you will get a resounding yes.

It can likely be done is as good as it gets.

And why is it you don't want to just extend the length/add an additional piece to the ribs ? This would require a different size tarp but would maintain the MH's "tensegrity".

Ah. What you're trying to build is commonly known as a Galaxy Hut, google that up for actual plans and stuff.
