Screened shelter with shade cloth on the sides sufficient to shade tent?

Post by missjoaniebloney » Sat Aug 20, 2016 1:20 am

Hey!
I am getting worried because it's closer to the event :P
I was thinking of buying a screened shelter like this and lining the inside walls of it with a shade cloth, then putting my tent under that. I'm not sure how to secure the shade cloth yet but that's my thought.

My tent itself is a regular backpacking tent with lots o' that mesh going on. I might dustproof that with some sheets or something and stick that under this screened shelter idea I have.

I'm gonna have to stake both of these down with rebar, or something else sufficient (what else is sufficient?).

But do you think this sounds like a good idea for a shaded home for my tent? I've been researching a lot and came up with this idea finally.

Thanks.

That's what you came up with huh? That thing looks like it was only meant to support the weight of the screens it came with, not an additional shade cloth -- and not a shade-cloth hit by heavy winds. No, that's not going to work. It's not even like one of those $120 pop-up structures (that also collapse under heavy winds) but just a flimsy screen structure meant for hiking out in forests in the summer.

I don't know what to say. There's only so much you can do for shade this late in the game. It shouldn't have been an afterthought to work out the last week. Maybe make a monkeyhut if you can transport it. A week? Maybe you can pull it off.

At the very least you should read more on the forum about staking down stuff and guylines and things like that, so at least your shit doesn't fly away and wreck someone else's camp.

BBadger nailed it. Do listen to what he said.

If you haven't read this year's Survival Guide to understand about the extremes of heat and wind, etc., then go do so now.

Without knowing the size of your tent, for simple playa tested shade structures, start here viewtopic.php?t=70367 to see the simple angled tarp and the "flying" wedge (although the rei link no longer works).
There's been a number of variations on the theme.
A simple angled flat tarp facing South is worthwhile, even though the morning sun will sneak in from the East first thing in the morning. Some people place it to face South-East to maximize morning sleeping time before the tent becomes too hot to bear being inside.
There's a few things you can do "wrong", but that's easily avoidable if you're forewarned and plan, and they're light and easy.

I used to have one of those. Every summer I would have a party in the backyard of my city lot, back east. I would invite a lot of people and entertain lavishly. The reason I did that is because my house was too small to host a decent party. I put the buffet in that tent to keep bugs off the food. Because every table was already being used, the ironing board was utilized to hold part of the buffet. Seeing that cute screenhouse brought back memories.

Why screens? If you're going to do a tent in a tent, get a tent.
You can apply any terms to any situation to rationalize bias or perspective.

Ya, that could be a problem.

It is getting close to the burn.

If you haven't figured out an alternative to this plan and want personal shade you can order and train up on the Kelty with this much time left.

You need the Kelty 12', Two of their poles, a bunch of nite-eyez reflective line and an extra set of MSR Groundhog stakes. You'll need to learn some simple knots.

See this thread for more info and photos.

Perhaps the appeal of your initial thought was that the setup was straightforward and you could wing it on playa.

You should practice how to set up, secure and take down your shade structure in advance.

You are not SOL but you would need to put your focus on this right away and get busy.
