Rinsing off with an outdoor RV shower
We'll be bringing our travel trailer to BM and we have an outdoor shower. Can we use it to rinse off dust before heading in?
It would just be water, no soaps/shampoo, is this kosher? I mean it does rain sometimes right? lol

Put a tub and/or towels underneath you, it'll evaporate.

Re: Rinsing off with an outdoor RV shower
It does indeed rain
and it sorta brings the event to its knees for a few hours (or potentially days) until it dries-out.
Nudity? No problem. Untreated water that has been in body contact dumped on the playa in one place? Big problem. If BLM sees this, it will potentially become a $$$ problem.
Elaborating on what GaminWench said above: Bring a dozen old towels and some plastic sheeting or mortar tub. Put the sheeting/tub on the ground and toss a couple of towels down. Use a (clean) 1 gallon herbicide pump sprayer filled with clean water and have Friend help you. Start at the top of your body and work the gunk down. You can take a really nice shower in less than a gallon this way. When done, hang up the (unbelievably) dirty towels to dry and you are done. Yes, the towels are now really yuckie, but you can still use them to shower on. They are just evap media and except for your feet, they never touch you. Make the uckie towels it a sport. We make bets as to how long it will take until they stand-up by themselves. Or answer to names.

Also, rules aside, you don't want to do this.
Playa mud is really sticky and awful.
You'll have a hell of a mess and create more problems than you solve.
If you want to do something to reduce dust coming in, bring an air compressor and blow off before going in. That works really well!

Also, turn off your water pump / lock the outside shower when not in use.
Last thing you want to see is a ZERO fresh water on Tuesday morning cause some dickwad didn't fully close the faucet.
Was teached that one the hard way.

Re: Rinsing off with an outdoor RV shower
The playa soil/dust you'd be washing off has the usual playa biologicals in it, including: aquatic micro-fauna eggs or dead body parts, bacteria normally on the playa, bacteria in droppings deposited by migratory birds, bacteria blown in off of surrounding land and the bacteria in the water that the water trucks spray on the dusty BRC roads (Total Coliform 1,732.9 mg / 100 mL, Escherichia Coli (e. Coli) 11.0 mg / 100 mL, for over 5,000 lbs of E. Coli bacteria spread on to the playa each year at burning man).
So going around with vulnerable infection locations exposed, you do want to get that dust off in a timely manner.
Caught/reported for letting body-exposed water onto the playa, not only $$$, it can also mean immediate eviction from the playa.

So what happens if it does rain are you allowed to take a natural rain shower or are you supposed to just hunker down and not let a drop of water off your body onto the playa

Re: Rinsing off with an outdoor RV shower
Actually, you're supposed to hunker down so you don't make ruts as the playa mud sticks to your feet or wheels and makes playa platforms. It rarely rains enough for a shower anyway. When it does, it is cold as hell, windy, and two years ago someone was struck by lightning.Weldingpaines wrote:So what happens if it does rain are you allowed to take a natural rain shower or are you supposed to just hunker down and not let a drop of water off your body onto the playa

Not quite. He was about three feet from a pole that was struck. He was instantly dubbed with "Lucky" as a playa name.AntiM wrote: and two years ago someone was struck by lightning.

Re: Rinsing off with an outdoor RV shower
I rinse off with a dishpan of water and wet bandanna. The dust in the water settles on the bottom and can be poured off and reused. (Also good for soaking your feet.) It's okay to pour out the gallon or so on the playa, dries up really quick but can be slippery if someone steps on it.

Being struck by lightning or any discharge knocking you off your feet can be an enlightening experience. As long as you can tell the tale.
Feels like a temporary reset of the brain, muscle by muscle flexing to feel if they still react afterward.
(several hits by 220ac once 75kVdc and several less impressive at about 5kV)
Apparently it is not OK to spill any drop deliberately on the playa.

I had some nice 120V through my hand when I discovered a secondary power source in the gear I was working on. Stunning, there's a word.

Re: Rinsing off with an outdoor RV shower
BM has a very small number of rules which were created because burners fucked up, the BLM created the rule, or the need for insurance created the rule. They are all there for good reasons. You heard all that above.
Not sure why someone would need to shower inbound on the playa. The rules apply to that and showering mid week.
Outbound showering is usually off-playa because it is hard to evaporate, evapotron the waste water quickly enough at the end of the event. People usually do their showering outbound at a truck stop, casino/hotel or hot springs.
It's really nice to change into a completely clean set of clothes after a warm hot shower and get some food, maybe even some sleep, rather than pushing through on a long drive home dusty and sleepy.
The prep guide and threads here have info in grey water gray water, which is what shower water and kitchen cleaning water is.
