Playawear Work In Progress 2016
I hope it is alright that I start this years WIP thread.
I am excited about my newest project. Probably my most ambitious yet.
The gold fabric is for the underskirt. Thinking of a light blue overdress. Haven't found the perfect fabric yet. All told looking at about 14 yards of fabric, including the undergarments. Going to make a mock-up this week. Will continue to post progress.
Still haven't found a good coordinating outfit for my husband. He is not as committed to costumes, so his needs to be much lighter and less complicated. But I think it will be tons of fun to mill about the piazza in our snazzy new duds.

Yes, please! And very cool, that looks like a great piece.
Good call on spotting the need for lighter and less complicated. After we went to and found some great pieces at the local opera's warehouse sale a couple years back, I was taken aback at their ingenuity. Since they were just making costumes for stage they didn't need every last little layer and unseen detail, and so most of their period costumes were decidedly faux. In the best possible way, that is. What would have been heavy and layered attire and uniforms were done by creating just the parts of the underlying layers you'd see stitched into the upper layers... brilliant!
As I see it, stage costuming shares a lot with playawear construction - unless it's to keep you warm at night, you're really looking to make the lightest and easiest to put on/take off version of something possible. We used that approach for an airship pirate coat we made for me last year, and I'm really happy with the result. I have a space pirate coat we made back in 2006 that I love dearly, but heavier than I need most of the time.
Have fun, and keep us posted on your progress!

Fabulous gown! Can't wait to see it.
Maybe this year I need to bring my dress, although I never did get the oversleeves made. Never will, at this point. The gold jewelry would definitely not make the trip, it was my mother's, and precious to me.

Re: Playawear Work In Progress 2016
Thanks for the encouragement everyone. Very nice dress, AntiM. You should definitely bring it. Hoping to run into other people dressed up in the piazza. Could be a great chance for some performance art. Lol.
I picked a pattern and fabric for the chemise, which will poke out of the sleeves. The biggest task so far has been tracing all the pattern pieces, so I can keep the original uncut, and reworking the directions. To save space, most of the directions refer to previous patterns, and it was all very convoluted. Lots of "see step 4 view b" kind of stuff. I copied, cut, and pasted, the old fashion way, and now have a good sequential set of directions. As you suggested, Trilo, I am currently trying to rework the pattern into a more manageable dress. The underskirt/stomacher/hooks&loops of the period correct dress are just going to be a big pain. I think I will just make the underskirt separate, like a slip, and sew in the contrast fabric on the bodice. We'll see.
Finally finished cutting out the mock-up out of cheap cotton fabric in tan and blue. Will start sewing tomorrow.

Hey, I have some of those same patterns. Not sure if I am up for sewing, haven't done much more than muumuus the last few years.

Gorgeous you
Re: Playawear Work In Progress 2016
Kitty it's so ambitious a project. Love to see it. I admire people that can sew an item from scratch. You actually 'make' clothing. I'm more of an 'unmake' kinda guy. Skirt into scarf or dress into cape. My main sewing tool is a razor blade box cutter.

AntiM why is this timeline link working here but not on your post? It looks identical to me. It IS identical. I copied and pasted from yours to try and figure this out. Oh, maybe you can't have a link in your sig. (Is that like a hitch in your get-along?)

And, nine pairs of shorts!
I have a little more personal stuff to do and some sewing for a friend's art car, but I am pretty much done with the big projects in time for container load on 8/6 in DC

Ann. You are going to be the most beautiful girl in puppet land.
I just checked and nobody on ePlaya has the user name Miss Yvonne.

Awwww, thanks Ratty!Ratty wrote:Ann. You are going to be the most beautiful girl in puppet land.

Miss Yvonne is a fav of mine. My son was brought up on Pee Wees Playhouse and lots of Ren and Stimpy. I have lots of fond memories of watching Pee Wee together.
I don't know if I want to tell you the burner name my roommates gave him at Alchemy last October!
Anyway, I don't quite have Miss Yvonne's fabulous bee hive and foofy dresses, I'm a little more butch than she is

Re: Playawear Work In Progress 2016
Well, I am sad to report that it doesn't look like I will finish this project in time... my mother got sick shortly after I started this project and its been on the back burner ever since...
On a positive note, she's well enough for the time being that I am able to make it to the burn. Much less glamorously than previous years, but sometimes you just have to play the hand you got.

I love the theme (SCA nerd) and I look forward to seeing these fabulous costumes.

Maladroit, it looks good. I've seen a couple of big coats like that, was quite a job for my lil singer
Oh my god, it's HUGE!
Re: Playawear Work In Progress 2016
I broke a few needles and used over 500 yards of thread in the coat. I have an ancient Montgomery Wards machine that has been sitting my garage for years. Gave it a lot of TLC and oil and a couple of replacement parts and kludges, but still needed some help through the thickest seams.
