My gift? Is it allowed

Post by Unclefunny » Mon Aug 22, 2016 2:13 pm

I was thinking to print up a sign letting Burners know that I am willing to share my expertise. I wanted to print up a 18" x 24" sign at Kinko's and plant my umbrella then pull up my beach chair and drink a beer. If anyone stops by I'd share my knowledge about investing in RE. I am very successful as a RE investor and not looking for business or anything like that. Just like to help people who have questions. I do it all the time at home and people are very interested in what I have to say. But I don't want to seem like I'm soliciting anything or not following the policies and meaning of Burning man. Also my friend is an expert in how to startup a business and take a company public. Should we just keep our mouths shut or put ourselves out there. I think we can make a difference in peoples live if they are interested.

There are all sorts of great seminars on the playa. You certainly could set something up and offer FREE non commercial advice to people. I would make it very useful and very non-marketing. The second you pull out a business card, you will be hammered into the deep playa.

People do not want to talk about commerce on the playa. Even the VCs don't. So no.

We don't know what RE is though. What if it's Raunchy Email? Maybe it's Ridiculous Entrances. I'd totally learn the Kramer slide on the playa.

There is no better way to spend a week at BM than to sit in a chair next to a sign doling out advice.

Considering that many burners consider it uncouth to even ask what folks do for a living and some to even discuss the default world at a burn - I am not sure this would be well received.

As someone mentioned above - there are a number of camps that offer seminar space that might be interested though.

Edit: To answer you question - It would be allowed though as long as it wasn't a commercial or promotional type thing.

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

OP: go to Burningman. Enjoy your first year.

Come back in three short weeks and answer your own question. You probably wont believe that in hindsight you actually asked it. Publically.

TL;DR Don't.

It seems like the best way to approach this would be to set up a generic advice booth, or borrow somebody else's because they're literally everywhere and are sometimes empty for your advice-giving pleasure, and then let people seek out advice for Rectal Extractions (really, what is RE?), you'll be able to say, "hey that's actually my default world job!" and then you can tell them EVERYTHING you know. Also, it's your first year? Your gift is being a virgin burner. Experience the things, meet the people. You'll find that exactly what you need to be doing, the playa will put in your lap. *eyebrow wiggle*

This, this, this! Don't gift anything but your open mind, participation, a helping hand, and a meal to share your first year. You have no clue what you're going to, even if you think you do. Put yourself on the receiving end of all the wonderful people there that want to give and share with you. You can't be a good giver if you don't know how to receive. Soak it all in, and mid-burn-week you may realize what unique contribution the playa needs from you. If you realize that's advice on RE as you first thought, then by all means give it.

Yeah. Just what people want to talk about when they go away to Burning Man for a week.
Thanks for bringing the default world shit to the playa. That's gonna rock.

Residential, or commercial?

Stop by Hungry Hungry Hookers at 6:30 & F and we can drink and discuss the looming enclosed mall default crisis.

Douche! Sorry I don't Know you & you probably have good intentions.

Fuck it, that's the doucheist "gift" I have ever heard of.

P.S. - Not going this year has made me even more of an asshole than normal. Sorry but this is something I feel strongly about. Leave the Default World at home.

Actually, If you want to put on a mustard yellow blazer, grab a binder and offer to"show" some nice couples some prime playa addresses, THAT would be pretty funny.

For some people, bringing their day jobs to the playa is a welcome gift. For others (like me) it's a chance to try out a NEW job. Like bartender, stripper pole repairman, professional wastrel.

I like where you're going with this. A "For Sale" sign in front of the Man & Temple would be funny. Schedule regular showings with perspective buyers. Stress the need for fire insurance (different blazer).

I like it.
