Yurt, setting up...

Ok so I'm new and wanting to get or make a yurt... Particularly the one from campingyurts.com I filled out the online stuff to ask the question if I was to try to make the yurt lighter by skipping every other board will the yurt be weaker... significantly weaker?

So for example after spreading the latice you might have a 12x12 diamond but buy skipping a board now you have a 24x24 diamond.

1-if I use 4-5 pieces of square/rectangular tarp for the roof will it still keep rain and dirt out?
2-an umbrella is recommended for the hole on top but a draft can take it if not secured any tips on securing it? Cuz I might just use another tarp with removable bungees.
Any advice is good?

It will have less than 1/2 the original strength.

So for example after spreading the latice you might have a 12x12 diamond but buy skipping a board now you have a 24x24 diamond.

There is no dirt at Burning Man, only dust which you can't keep out no matter what you do. Depending on how tarps are installed rain probably won't be kept out either.

Tie a bungy cord to the umbrella handle and to a lag bolt driven into the ground directly below the umbrella. Depending on how much elasticity the bungy has left it will raise up and spill air from the top of the Yurt as the wind increases. Glue a large red beachball on top of the umbrella

You do realize that by "yurt" for the playa we're usually referring to hexayurt, made from insulated panels of polysio foam board with a shiny foil surface on both sides.

Take a look at the first post in this thread.

Pick the hexayurt that is closest in size to your more traditional yurt. Now that you have an idea of possible wind loads, you can see why you may not want to be reducing the structure of a yurt.

This has inspired me to cut all my EMT into 2 foot lengths and buy connectors. Now they fit in my suitcase! Instant shade in a bag! Haha to all you people humping those big awkward 10 foot pipes.
