Overhead road clearance after Gerlach

Post by sparr » Fri Aug 26, 2016 12:51 pm

My vehicle will be <13ft tall for the majority of my drive. I would like to reconfigure it to approx 15ft tall at the earliest feasible point.

Are there any overhead wires or structures after turning onto the gate road? How about after leaving Gerlach?

This big bad boy drove in. Figure it out.

No one can guarantee the data you are requesting other than NDOT.

They were also escorted. See the blog for their route.

If clear, where would you expect to be able to stop to reconfigure? You're not really supposed to stop anywhere unless there is a need, like for Water in Gerlach at the town's sales, or Will Call for your ticket. If you stop on the playa when the line is moving, you may get hidden in blowing dust and smacked from behind. I suppose you might be able to stop in D lot. Shoulders are known to be soft in many places; good way to roll, even after you've been stopped for a while.

Do remember that Gate Road is subject to driving laws like any other road. You and your vehicle has to be fully safe for the road until you get to your camp, as you're LEO bait.

Don't do it. It's illegal without a special permit.

Or, go ahead... knock yourself out. Not my problem!

if it's already packed and rolling at 13' sounds like you are good to make it to camp. Are you bringing uncomfortably hunched giraffes?

No snark, I'm just curious, why do you want to reconfigure in-route? Seems like a lot of work.

New sport: zorb polo. Played with busses on Gate Road. Goal is Greeters. Could become a thing.

Last year during EA my gate experience was about 80% stopped and 20% idling forward, and I reconfigured from 9ft to 11ft tall during a stop in the gate line. I expect non-EA Sunday to be at least that bad this year, and I wouldn't be surprised to have minutes-long stops on 34, either.

Only allowed if he is in it.

Does his Zorb need a VP if its towed? What it it breaks free & rolls past gate? Who is responsible?????

What if its inflated & a stowaway sneaks inside it? Will he get turned back? Will he lose his ticket??????

What will he do????????

Can it rolls along, can it cleanup up MOOP or hippies off the playa?

p.s.
I'd wait until you are in camp. No need to be doing something (more) that will attract LEO attention.

Or he can take one for the team & intentionally divert the attention of LEO.

11 feet is perfectly legal. 15 isn't.

And considering how some LEOs manufacture "reasons", there's no need to hand them one on a platter.

And they're out here, too.
Seen several rigs being stopped so far.

Following up on this. I did not observe any overhead obstructions of any sort after turning off the highway. An arbitrarily tall vehicle would have worked for the gate line.

Over 14 feet is illegal on the road without a permit.
There's cops all around itching for a reason to pull you over and wish you a happy burn.
You go right ahead and do whatever you think is wise.

I think 13'6" is the limit on the road? I wasn't suggesting doing anything on the road. I definitely mean to wait until after the turnoff before adjusting.

then why would you care about the clearance on the road?

I apologize. I have used "road" in this thread to mean two different things in different contexts, and that was a miscommunication on my part.

I mean to make the change after turning off the paved highway onto the dirt "gate road".

ah, well I'd say the miscommunication was in the title.....implying "after Gerlach" would mean starting where Gerlach ends. If you'd asked when you leave the pavement at Gate road, then "road" would be very clear.....no big deal, just explaining my confusion.

I don't think the law changes on Gate Road.
They enforce every other traffic law until you are past the gate.

I'm not saying I think there's anything wrong with converting to playa-mode on gate road, I just wouldn't assume the cops won't use it as an excuse to meet you for an autograph.
