I had heard about Burning Man several years ago, but it was always described as a rave festival with a bit of hippy lifestyle thrown in, which is not really something I had any huge interest in (some, but not much). But recently a few people I am friends with and/or follow online have expressed their enjoyment of Burning Man as a community rather than any one event or portion of what I am slowly learning Black Rock City actually is. Once I realized that those naysayers weren't correctly conveying BM, and I saw a bit of what it really is, I decided that if I am able to I am going to go next year. There is a lot of footage on youtube that looks like so much fun!
I am a regular member of another event (the Jonathon Coulton Cruise) that evokes a lot of the same things that BM seems to embody and I want to see if I can find the same sort of things at BM that I do on the JoCoCruise. I have found in JoCoCruise a safe place to express the feminine side of myself that I had kept hidden from the world for close to 30 years, and BM looks like a safe place to do so as well.
I enjoy playing games (board, video, role playing, etc...), fixing computers, and making chainmail art (something I hope to gift to people). I like all sorts of music, pretty much anything with a fun beat or cool lyrics.
One of the people that really pushed me over the edge on wanting to join is Matthew Mercer, dungeon master on the online D&D series Critical Role, and I hope to thank him in person for his gift to me of what I hope to be a wonderful experience.

Hola and hello...
It's good to start planning early and there are lots of helpful threads to do that here. Read the first timers survival guide at burningman.org. We welcome questions but if you can find your answer with a Google search or Eplaya search we'll respect you a whole lot more so dig in and enjoy the ride

Welcome.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Jon, Welcome to eplaya. One of the wonderful aspects of Burning Man is the ability to be who you want to be. You can embrace your feminine side every minute of the week. Do plenty of research and don't believe the u-tube videos. Many photographers depict the event as a meat market of young hard bodies. Maybe that was true in 1989. Now there are many veteran burners of age as well as the fashionistas. All nationalities. All preferences. Just don't waste your week being shy. Get to know some of us here. Eplayans can be a safety net when the desert turns on you. (Wind, rain, lonely, thirsty etc...) Go for it.
