If we're going to be perfectly accurate, "winning the popular vote" does not imply winning a majority of it.

Just like, "they won the football game" does not denote by what margin of victory the game was won.

Remember that guy Al Gore? He famously "won the popular vote" without securing a majority either.

in that case, it seems you'd want to also add "eligible, didn't vote". that gives and interesting perspective. in many (most?) cases, "E: none of the above" won.
what if the election were 6 months earlier, to allow the possibility of a "do over" in such cases?
Again I'm leaning towards a parliamentary system.........Ours may have "run it's course".

Majority, plurality, whatever. The reality is that the popular vote is meaningless in an electoral vote based election.

Winning the popular vote is, at best, a consolation prize. Even as a consolation prize, the popular vote is "meh" because no candidate was campaigning for the popular vote. Every candidate did just enough (or not enough in some cases) to win electoral votes for a given state. A passing grade. Any more beyond that was just wasted effort.

I don't even get why people are championing this popular "win" anyway. The most favorable popular vote estimates after absentee votes in California come in place Clinton about 2% ahead of Trump in the popular vote (up from the 0.17%). TWO PERCENT. That's it? That's pathetic. This, after nearly all mainstream media was publishing pieces against Trump. After endorsements and abstentions rang out even from the Republican establishment. After Trump doubled down on alienating people from all different backgrounds. This would've been a FAIL even if Clinton had also won the electoral college. It demonstrates just how uninspiring and out of touch Clinton's campaign has been in general.

it's almost to the point that our conservative friends may start coming out and praising him for his restraint ... allowing the demonstrations to be quashed and the project to continue.

Popular vote means nothing, because those are not the rules. If they were, we'd have different results. Here in California, many Republicans don't even vote on Presidential elections because they don't matter, it always goes to the Dem candidate. If they knew popular vote mattered, many more would probably come out and vote. I'm sure the same applies to other 1 Party strongholds as well.

As to this election year, Hillary only won in areas that don't have voter ID laws and in the presence of Sanctuary cities. Odds are very high that many of the votes cast for her shouldn't be counted anyhow because they were cast by the dead, illegal aliens or non-existent people. Take those away, and she might not have even won the popular vote.

Either way, it really doesn't matter. The electoral college exists for a reason, to prevent high population areas from completely dominating low population areas. We are not a Democracy, we are a Representative Republic. The word Democracy doesn't even appear in the Constitution.
