Some people I know fill a barrel with straw (rye I think) and oyster mushrooms, then filter their gray water through it. The mushrooms feed on all the nasty biological stuff in the water and do a pretty good job filtering it. Not sure how clean the water comes out or how long the process takes, but it is something to look into.

I could just see the instructions for such a system with the recycled water:

1. Start showering as usual.
2. Soap up, rinse off.
3. The water will turn off automatically after 5 minutes unless you flip the lever from "fresh water" to "recycled water"
4. Continue showering in your recycled water for as long as you want
5. Turn off the water

It seems important to make the system as idiot-proof as possible.

For cleaning, don't make each user do it; instead maybe automate a cleaning cycle that runs through the grey water line after each shower. A gallon of water with some abrasive detergent could be pumped through the grey water line, then a little to rinse it.

Awesome. That will take care of clearing your pipes of the nasty grey water the unlucky victim just doused their body with.
Then, there could be an automatic system that washes anyone who is coming out of that shower, since they will be nasty as fuck and need a shower more than they did before they went in.

TBD. I'm hopeful that most people would know to let the worst water go before they start recycling. If only so they don't get a bunch of soap in their recycled shower, even ignoring the other gunk in that water. If too many people don't understand that part, I could see just adding a delay, so when they flip the lever they keep getting fresh water for 30 seconds or something, enough time for the nasty water to drain.

I hope you have a good filter solution too, for your pump. You'll have hair, grime, soap, etc. going into that catch basin to be pumped back out. I have enough in my drain of my shower, and that's with clean supply water.

You're going to have butt-matter in that water, people seeking a shower are actually wanting to clean their pores not get some kind of fecal related malady. Just use clean water for Peter's sake... I can understand wanting to get all crafty, but in the end you'd be better off with a wet towel or a pack of baby wipes.

Sparr, the wheel needs to be reinvented every single day. Go for it man. If you come up with something NASA worthy then that's Freaking great. I just can't get past the fact that someone is going to pee in the shower. I understand where your coming from & it's the challenge more than the practicality of just getting clean. Best of luck, just don't get anyone sick or dead.

Rock on. I have a bus & will be using fresh water. I will innovate elsewhere. For the record I think recycling shower water is a bad idea for a 1 week event.

Of course recycling showers can be done. NASA recycles URINE into drinking water.
But they are in outer goddamm space where self-sustainability is life-critical.

Have you noticed they never mention the expense of the system? It's hard to even find any straight $$ talk. That's because they're over $5000 and they're trying to claim you SAVE money.

The "cost savings" touted by the people selling those recycling showers are BULLSHIT!! $1000/year savings on showering? We don't even pay that much per year, and we have a niagra-falls, torrential downpour showerhead and we use that thing like it was free. Because it almost is.

My original rideshare guy told me about the one in his camp in 2008 and 09. Gigsville. Two years ago the camp across from us was '24 hour shower'. Some officials came by and tested the water. It was safe and clean. I have to say the equipment was huge. Tanks and motors and hoses galore. It was on a raised wooden platform. Open undressing room and a big shower area. Sweet.

It can certainly be done but Mulch has the necessary skills and qualifications to do things like build spacecraft with his left hand while operating on people's brains with his right hand while chewing gum and making it look easy.
It's not a matter of just recirculating shower water filtered through a bucket of charcoal and a cheesecloth then clearing it out with a shot of fresh water when you're done getting "clean".
