Im a first time attendee

Post by Mrs The Punisher MSM » Tue Mar 14, 2017 6:59 pm

Hello my name's Vanessa I live in California. I'm married & have been with my hubby for over 23 years. We have a 19 y/o son who is mentally challenged (I dislike the word handicap). I have three grown daughters. I love cats (I have 4), baking, cooking, reading, writing & helping the homeless in my & surrounding communities.
I am so stoked to find a place that I can be myself & be included dispit how I look or dress. I look forward to being able to help others, it is one of my passions. I have so much love & kindness to give.
I heard about this event from a show called Bondi Ink. It's about a tattooing shop, it's artists, and customers. Anyway, a customer mentioned an experience about Burning Man so I decided to look it up.
In hope I get a chance to go. Money is really tight though so we will see. I hope to see you there!

Vanessa welcome to eplaya. Do lots of reading and keep your prep as simple as possible. If moneys tight you can pick up used gear at garage sales and apply for a low priced ticket. (although the ticket is just one of the expenses). Read every thing. Welcome

There are lots of ways you can get out to Burning Man on the cheap - follow the leads ratty gave you about grabbing gear at garage sales. If you're creative, you can rig out a good camp from going to Saver's and other thrift stores, too. Read up on this: http://tickets.burningman.org/low-income-ticket-program and follow the instructions. There are a lot of tickets allocated to the program every year and often, they go unused due to lack of awareness.

First time I've heard that. Shocking if true.

They're allocated at a lower rate already - BMorg gets the write off for them whether they're used or not. It's not a conspiracy or anything, but Burning Man doesn't go out of its way to advertise the program either. Happens every year.

And also, since we have a history detail parsing, let me clarify by saying "MANY of them go unused every year." I did not mean the low income tickets at large go unused every year.

I suppose a few LITs do go unused simply because one must pick up a low-income ticket at Will Call and they are not transferrable, meaning that anyone whose ride falls through at the last minute, or has other life chaos and can't attend--well, that ticket is definitely not getting used, simply because it can't be reassigned. I imagine it is by now a well-known "nature of the beast" kind of thing.

But I digress . . .

Hello, Vanessa! :D You're definitely welcome, and you can be as wacky or weird as you want. It's dreadfully hard to be the weirdest person at Burning Man . . . and if you are, I'm pretty sure there's some sort of parade that springs up to celebrate you, but it's hard to distinguish from the other spontaneous parades . . .

Cost is definitely a concern when Burning; my first Burn probably cost between $1,000 and $1,200 including ticket, coming from the Northwest with a rideshare who split the gas money with me. Food, lights, gear, gas, water, batteries, & a motel stay definitely add up. I borrowed a tent*, skipped a shade (I don't recommend that), and ate very plainly (things I didn't have to cook). Still fun!

* Only borrow things that can get irreparably dusty, or lightly destroyed!
