That all said, I have had cats for 55 years and have yet to be damaged by one of them to the point where I needed a doctor. Lots of scratches though. Cannot recall the last bite that broke the skin (the girl nibbles lightly at my elbow to wake me up in the morning).

The big guy in my lap has the sweetest disposition of any cat I have ever had. His wide eyed exuberance combined with his insatiable curiosity have led to many rolling-on-the-floor laughing moments, and he just turned one year old.

Had dogs as a kid, but cats have been part of my household for over forty years - a total of seven - usually two at time with one designated the main cat and the other the auxiliary cat. They've all had distinct personalities, and been affectionate, clever, and useful, skillfully dispatching any scorpion that gets into the house.

Growing up we always had both - my brother had dogs, I had cats (and mice, hamsters, gerbils, snakes ...)

Now that we're old my brother still has dogs, I still have cats (none of the other critters now though).

I like (other people's) dogs, but I'm 100% a cat person. So much so that we have 3 indoor-only cats in a one bedroom city-sized apartment. Right now they're drag-racing across the floor.

When they play predator-prey it is fun to watch. Our two have gotten really good at using the walls and vertical furniture surfaces to parkour around the house, without losing any speed.

When we are asleep, sometimes they wake us up by bouncing off the sides of the while playing their frantic game.

Whenever I get scratched by one of my cats, within minutes the affected area starts itching. Lasts from a few minutes to over an hour. I've heard its because of an infection as well.

Hmmmm, maybe I can use that the next time my Wife refers to me as an alien, when I do something weird.

Cat scratches and bites seem to have little effect on me. Maybe I have developed a resistance to the bacteria/enzymes over the years.

My son got a bite once, and he had to be hospitalized for three days. Could be the cat as well. Maybe some are worse than others.

I guess I'm more of a dog person these days, but I've had cats my whole adult life up until two years ago. I'm allergic so life is simpler not having a kitty in the house but I do miss them.

My Siberian Husky Maya turned 12 today. She has a 10 y.o. brother Koda. I've had huskies for nearly 25 years now. Total hair factories, but great pack animals and will never tire out on a run or walk.

And personally neither... don't own any pets... sometimes I philosophize that owning other species falls into the slightly weird category... owning humans isn't cool (anymore... yet mortgages are totally acceptable.) But I'm probably just more allergic to responsibility than cats or dogs.

I'm more of a plant person... they move way slower than cats, don't run away and get "lost"(stolen/eaten) like dogs... and you can sell their carcasses after you kill them... hello, agriculture...

And tho I don't own pets, I wind up playing with friends' pets at their places more than they do... they're so fluffy! Dogs freaking love me... cats are too cool to admit they do...

I like both. Dogs are good people who need constant maintenance. Cats are beautiful women, who are low maintenance, who give me their time when they're in the mood. I own neither but live in the country and have neighbor dogs that come over to hang out, either because they like me or I keep treats in the house. Not sure which. Few neighbor cats, they supply the food chain up here. Wish I had some to control the gophers.
