The Dark Ages is a term of historical periodisation referring to a period of supposed cultural and economic deterioration, and scarcity of written record, usually being contrasted with the more recent times of the writer and with classical antiquity. Its original use referred to the Western European Middle Ages (roughly the 6th to 14th centuries), emphasising the perceived decline following the fall of the Roman Empire.

The term employs traditional light-versus-darkness imagery to contrast the 'darkness' of the period in question with earlier and later periods of 'light'. The concept of a 'Dark Age' originated from the Italian scholar Petrarch in the 1330s, and was originally intended as a sweeping criticism of Late Latin literature. Petrarch regarded the post-Roman centuries as 'dark' compared to the 'light' of classical antiquity. The actual term derives from the Latin saeculum obscurum, originally applied by Caesar Baronius in 1602 to a tumultuous period in the 10th and 11th centuries.

This original definition is still sometimes found in popular use, but increased recognition of accomplishments during the Middle Ages has since the 20th century led to the appellation usually being restricted to the Early Middle Ages (c. 5th–10th century). However, many modern scholars of the era tend to avoid the term for its negative connotations, finding it misleading and inaccurate. Its usage in popular culture is often pejorative implying a time of backwardness.

The bispectrum, the three-point function of density fluctuations in Fourier space, is the lowest order statistic that carries information about the spatial coherence of large-scale structures. For Gaussian initial conditions, when the density fluctuation amplitude is small, tree-level (leading order) perturbation theory predicts a characteristic dependence of the bispectrum on the shape of the triangle formed by the three wave vectors. This configuration dependence provides a signature of gravitational instability, and departures from it in galaxy catalogs can be interpreted as due to bias, that is, non-gravitational effects. On the other hand, N-body simulations indicate that the reduced three-point function becomes relatively shape-independent in the strongly non-linear regime. In order to understand this non-linear transition and assess the domain of reliability of shape-dependence as a probe of bias, we calculate the one-loop (next-to-leading order) corrections to the bispectrum in perturbation theory. We compare these results with measurements in numerical simulations with scale-free and CDM initial power spectra. We find that the one-loop corrections account very well for the departures from the tree-level results measured in numerical simulations on weakly non-linear scales. In this regime, the reduced bispectrum qualitatively retains its tree-level shape, but the amplitude can change significantly. At smaller scales, the reduced bispectrum in the simulations starts to flatten, an effect which can be partially understood from the one-loop results. In the strong clustering regime, where perturbation theory breaks down entirely, the simulation results confirm that the reduced bispectrum has almost no dependence on triangle shape, in rough agreement with the hierarchical ansatz.

Allegedly an experiment carried out by Third Reich scientists working for the SS in a German facility known as Der Riese ("The Giant") near the Wenceslaus mine and close to the Czech border, Die Glocke is described as being a device "made out of a hard, heavy metal" approximately 2.7 metres wide and 3.7 to 4.6 metres high, having a shape similar to that of a large bell. According to an interview of Witkowski by Cook, this device ostensibly contained two counter-rotating cylinders which would be "filled with a mercury-like substance, violet in color". This metallic liquid was code-named "Xerum 525" and was "stored in a tall thin thermos flask a meter high encased in lead".

Additional substances said to be employed in the experiments, referred to as Leichtmetall (light metal), "included thorium and beryllium peroxides". Witkowski describes Die Glocke, when activated, as having an effect zone extending out 150 to 200 metres. Within the zone, crystals would form in animal tissue, blood would gel & separate while plants would decompose into a grease like substance. Witkowski also said that five of the seven original scientists working on the project died in the course of the tests. Based upon certain external indications, Witkowski states that the ruins of a concrete framework—aesthetically dubbed "The Henge"—in the vicinity of the Wenceslas mine, some 3.1 kilometres southeast of the main Complex Sokolec underground works of Project Riese, may have once served as a test rig for an experiment in "anti-gravity propulsion" generated with Die Glocke. However, the derelict structure itself has also been interpreted to resemble the remains of a conventional industrial cooling tower.



Witkowski’s statements along with Cook’s views prompted further conjecture about the device from various American authors, including Joseph P. Farrell, Jim Marrs, and Henry Stevens. In his book, Hitler's Suppressed and Still-Secret Weapons, Science and Technology, Stevens concludes that the violet mercury-like substance described by Witkowski could only be red mercury because normal mercury "has no fluid compounds according to conventional wisdom".Stevens presents a story attributed to German scientist Otto Cerny as told to then 13-year-old Greg Rowe around 1961 which alleged that a concave mirror on top of a device which seemed similar in description to Die Glocke provided the ability to see "images from the past" during its operation.

Freedom is the opportunity to live your life as you want to live it.
The urge for freedom is so much a part of human nature that it can never be suppressed by laws, slogans, or commandments. There is a difference, however, between the urge and the reality.
For most people, freedom remains a pleasant fantasy — something to dream of while carrying out daily obligations in the real world. They spend their lives talking vaguely of what they want in life, what they think they’re missing, why they don’t have it, and who it is that prevents them from being free.
For most people, freedom is an “if only.” “If only it hadn’t been for my wife, I would have been a success.” Or “If only it hadn’t been for Roosevelt (or Nixon or whomever), the country would be free.”
The unfree person can never fully repress his urge for freedom — whether he considers his jailer to be his family, his job, society, or the government. And so, from time to time, halfhearted attempts are made to break free from the restrictions.
But unfortunately, those attempts usually depend upon the individual’s ability to change the minds of other people — and so optimism eventually turns into frustration and despair.
Hoping to be free, many people engage in continual social combat — joining movements, urging political action, writing letters to editors and Congressmen, trying to educate people. They hope that someday it will all prove to have been worthwhile.
But as the years go by they see little overall change. Small victories are won; defeats set them back. The world seems to continue on its path to wherever it’s going. Until they die, the hopeful remain just as enslaved as they’ve always been.
The plans, the movements, the crusades — none of these things has worked. And so the unfree person continues to dream, to condemn, and to remain where he is.
