Anyone else going crazy?..

Post by antio » Fri Mar 24, 2017 5:33 pm

...or am I the only one who is reading posts non-stop, stressing like hell about getting tickets, making endless lists, checking the weather (OMG, it's still a lake!!), looking for clothes on ebay, mapping out routes and generally behaving like a giddy 5 year old?

Is it a virgin burner kind of thing? Will I ever get over this? Will I even get there this year?

I'm kinda freaking out. In a bad way about tickets, in a good way about everything else. And it's not even April yet...

Nope.

You are the only one 'going' crazy.

The rest of us made it there years ago.

I fell off that exact same cliff 6 months before my first burn. My friends thought I was having some mental issues. I am still, years later, doing the same as you. Online buying stuff, making a trip to town to buy just one more sheet of hologram stars....all that stuff. Burning Man ruined my life as I knew it, and I have never been happier.

Just dont ever think of labor intensive gifts or projects, (unless you really love them). You'll be working on the next burn everyday for the rest of your life.

To quote Dr. Dru..."Perfectly normal, perfectly healthy." You're going to be fine.

You know what makes a great gift? Something with the year on it and a Man shape of some kind. Don't overthink it. Also, you're under no obligation.

Make lists, don't obsess. You're going to fuck it up no matter what with at least one or two things.

Tickets...yeah, maybe come, maybe no. Stressing about it won't help, though. It's like trying to keep the plane in the sky by gripping the armrest super hard and gritting your teeth. If the plane's going to crash, it's going to happen with or without your input. Same with getting tickets.

Deep breaths. Iiiiiiiiiiiiin through the nose. Oooooooooout through the mouth.
Rinse and repeat.

Capt. You make me smile. I have a coworker that got as far as making a burner profile. I've been wondering if he would register for the sale. Or if he is clueless. Yes. It sucks. Dont go.

It's normal & contagious.

You will be on here several times a day asking about everything that has already been answered & getting Snark filled replies. By your 2nd or 3rd Burn you will go in to the experimental Burner phase where you will start innovating your burn with swamp coolers & water purification showers & start posting about great ideas. Then you will become old & jaded & snark all the Burgins who are like you now :-)

Oh yeah, you will get absolutely nothing accomplished at work for the next 5 months because you will be thinking of Burning Man. Don't get fired.

Checking the weather in Gerlach at this time of year is perfectly reasonable for an obsessed virgin. I did the same thing.

It's year two for me and I am spending less time obsessing about how I will stay alive but I am already writing area artists to see if they need help building. I'm also heavily involved with our camp's planning. Getting out there and surviving is demystified for me now but I am finding other vehicles to entertain my obsession. Probably spending bout the same amount of time planning but it's on different things.

Hahaha, your replies just made my morning! I was in a weird place yesterday, stressing about tickets, but feeling happy and positive again today, so thank y'all! :)

Thanks for the tips about the little gifts, the year idea is great. I was thinking of soooo many things, like organising a 'human library' project, and swamp coolers, and evaporators and... well, it doesn't help I'm flying from London with just one suitcase! So I'll pace myself and feel the place out this year, and leave the bigger plans for next year.

"At some point you realize its a tent city in a dirty dusty shit hole."

Yes, thank you - I've already realised that and it's part of what gets me excited about it! ;)

And no, unfortunately it doesn't seem to be contagious. My friends thing I'm crazy...

Pretty much. However during this time for me last year I learned:
* how to program arduino LEDs
* how to build a very well-functioning bucket cooler
* the basics of solar power and general electrical concepts
* how to screen-print (I used to do stencil work but my design for last year's gifts were too intricate for cutting)
* how to survive for 9 days out there

None of this is particularly useful for my professional life.

"how to survive for 9 days out there"

IMHO that is the best training you can get for just about any professional career you might have.

I've been making big foam stamps and sewing alternately. It's a wonder I even have time to work.

I love the homemade swag. Think beer caps or shrinky dinks. Little men made from the hardware store or fashioned from wire. Search past threads here or look on pinterest. (save me one.)

Totally normal first time. Soon you will learn to lower your expectations to pretty much zero so that everything is a pleasant surprise. For instance, I'm not counting on getting any damn tickets in the main sale tomorrow. Won't happen.

My virgin year was the year of the lottery and the first year of STEP. I am an original stepchild. The thread about STEP that year and timestamps etc. will always be the most epic kind of crazy for me!

All over the world you will see people waiting for the bus: staining their necks, maybe even out in the street staring down the road looking for the bus, hoping, praying that the bus will pop into view.

All that brain energy totally useless.

Knowing the reality makes no difference. Heck, I don't even need a ticket in the General Sale this year and I'm stressed from so many years of being stressed on ticket day...the worst memory anxiety might be staring at the stupid green man walking and walking and walking and then, poof: he didn't make it.

I find that helping others get ready typically has allayed my anticipatory stress in the past. I've got two virgins in tow so far this year, as well, so I'll enjoy having them to guide a little.
