Hopeful New Burner from Maryland

Post by LadyStormcrow » Tue Apr 04, 2017 5:13 pm

Hi ePlaya!

I first learned about Burning Man in college 10 years ago, and after much dreaming and debating and soul-searching, I've finally mapped out 2018 as the year I want to go. I'm 30 years old, and employed as a foster care social worker in Prince George's County; it's not a job that gives a lot of free time, but when I can, I love fantasy fiction writing (especially urban fantasy), and I've recently started getting back into sewing and crafts. I'm also on the autism spectrum, and I really want to design a costume that's based around stimming, with different beads and cloth textures and things you're not only allowed, but supposed to fidget with.

The 2018 date is mostly because I already have plans for Labor Day this year, but I figure it'll also be good to have extra time to research and prepare (especially since I've never camped in the desert before). I don't know any Burners in the Baltimore-DC area, but if you're reading this, I'd love to talk to veteran Burners! Share your advice - I am eager to learn :D

Hey there, welcome to ePlaya!
Elderberry

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Hey, Welcome to ePlaya, LadyStormcrow !
It is never too early to begin learning and planning. A couple ways you can do that are to...

...subscribe to Jack Rabbit Speaks; the BM e-mail newsletter where all important information is published.

...And participate here on ePlaya.

...And of course... read the entire main website. .... Uh.... Well, maybe not the whole thing. But start with the First Timer Information -- especially the Survival Guide. This will tell you lots about camping in the desert.

And if the desert environment seems foreboding... remember that most of us here on ePlaya laugh at it. It's just a matter of learning, and getting used to it.

I love that idea!

Welcome aboard. Explore the preparation threads, the Clothing discussions, and wander around Open Discussion. You'll be an old hand by 2018.
