4x4 Hexayurt Transport

Post by NappyHeadedHo » Mon Apr 17, 2017 3:17 pm

Hey y'all! I've got another hexayurt question.

I was initially going to build the 8 ft, but once we got to the store and saw the panels in person, we decided a 6 ft stretch would be sufficient for 2 virgins.

I've created a model of the stretch that i got here that will be able to transport in a 4x8 stack.

I'm coming all the way from Virginia, and am worried about the cost of fuel mileage if I have to transport the yurt on top of my vehicle.
I'm trying to figure out a way to transport it in a 4x4 stack that will still be fairly simple to assemble on the Playa. I found instructions on one way to do it here but I don't like the way how many pieces its broken down into and also concerned about stable it would be cutting the boards in half and creating a tape hinge.

My plan is to take my unfolded yurt and simply cut it down the middle (pictured below). I would still be able to fold it like the normal 6 ft stretch, and then just stack the two halves on top of each other. When I get on the Playa, I can lay it flat and tape the boards flush together, protecting the integrity of the structure. The yurt will be in two pieces (as opposed to four) and can be set up like the normal 6 ft stretch after the two halves have been taped together.

Opinions?

That's a interesting and clever idea.
The sticky part might be shifting the door opening so it doesn't interfere with your slice-in-half method.
I have not done a joint like that myself but you might consider a taping a piece of 1x4 lumber around the base and/or roofline to reinforce the cut panel.

Sounds cool, if you do it make sure to post back how it worked for you.
