Oregon Burner Contemplating 2017

Post by daisymaybee » Sat Mar 18, 2017 8:51 pm

Hello from Eugene/Bend (I am a dual citizen). Having attended Burning Man since 2012, things get dustier every year and ironically, the purpose of Burning Man gets clearer to me every year. Each year, I assist with a new or old project, volunteer, and this year my little sister and I are putting together the Black Rock City Tour of Homes. It has probably been done before and that should never stop one from moving forward. We will put a fresh and ridiculous spin on it.

The thing that I love about the playa, beside the obvious openness and creativity - it's a place to shine your uniqueness and share it. Burners are open to experiment and play, leave behind preconceptions, and the trappings of normal consumer society. The gift economy is lovely.

Our little camp is seeking like minded creative types who are self-sufficient campers. We are older than the average burner (50s), open to ideas and especially those that include ecological consciousness.

Hey there, welcome to ePlaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Welcome.

LOL, you are not older than this average burner, and several more on eplaya. Of course, none of us are truly average, are we?

Hey from Portland.
I'm a soon-to-be virgin burner, having finally gotten my shit together enough to get a ticket and start planning. I wanted to go 20 years ago when I read about it somewhere, but just never got it together enough to go(great executor, poor planner).
Anyway I'm in my 50s and starting to look at camp options. I'm planning to attend on a motorcycle as soon as I get my trailer/hitch built up.

Hi Daisymaybee,

I was curious as to whether or not you were going with the 2017 Tour of Homes idea. That sounded as if it could be a blast. If so, and if you need 'homes' to consider for your tour, mine might work well with your project. It is a 1963 vintage Greyhound bus converted lovingly into an RV. The vintage factor and the exterior color (kind of a rose pink) attract a lot of interest when I have it out. And the inside is very well done and fun also. PM me for more info if you are interested. I love Oregon and the Oregonians that I have had the pleasure to hang with, so either way, I hope to see you in the dust. And either way, if you see a vintage pink bus there with "In the Pink" in big letters on the back along with "Longview TX", stop by and introduce yourself. If I am 'home' you would be most welcome to come in for a visit, a cool place to rest, a beverage, a snack, or whatever else I may be able to offer you at the moment. I plan to camp solo and be located on the outward side of 'L' Street somewhere in the 4:30 - 4:45 area (although it is possible that I may end up camping with the Rootpile Camp folks).

I like this BRC home tour idea. Maybe there are "open house" signs. There could be themes: interior exotic/international, BBQ-yards, eco-homes, ironic baroque, circus, best kitchen, etc. The value would be to photograph unique camps as a library of best of best "BRC Properties Not for Sale" over years.

Your pink bus is absolutely stunning!

I wish I was confident driving something that large. I have just once. For 15 minutes. (Thanks Motz!)

Thanks Savannah. The bus was built for highway driving and is a lot of fun out on the open road. City driving is a bit intense. It really might not take you much more practice to gain the level of confidence you want to drive a bus like this comfortably. At 35' long it is shorter than many RVs on the road, and built to last. Do stop by and say hello if you see the bus (it is looking more and more like I will be camping this year with Rootpile, the bluegrass camp). And if you want more time driving a larger vehicle, I can almost always use a co-pilot when out for a road trip.

Someone should really run with the tour of homes idea. It does sound like a fun way to see the city and meet people.

Hi, Daisymaybee!
I'm Ellen, a.k.a. Typhoone or Shady Lady, and I will be in Black Rock City in August with my husband Gary, a.k.a. The Shady Character, coming from our home in Eugene, Oregon. We would love to connect with you sometime during the next few weeks if you're in town. We are in our early 60's, fit and energetic! Check out Gary's blog squashpractice.wordpress.com and click on FUN to see our homemade transportation system, the DateTrike, which we brought to the playa several years ago. I have been burning since about 2003, with the exception of one year when I couldn't go, and the last two when we couldn't get tickets. (Gary has accompanied me about half the time.) But now we're back in, and excited. You can reach me at [email protected]. I like your Tour of Homes idea, and I look forward to meeting you.
Cheers,
Ellen

Burning Man demographics are interesting. There's a huge dip during the "got a kid" ages, but then the 50 plus crowd pick up the pace a bit. 20-early 30s are still in the majority, mid 30s-40s you see a sag, then 50s-++ have another smallish peak.
