Burning man Virgin looking to help!

Post by KellyMG » Thu May 25, 2017 8:11 am

Hello everyone!
I am very excited for my new adventure into Black Rock City. I will be attending with an experienced burner however, I am looking on here to see if there is anyone looking for volunteers!

I will not be there until the start date but I would really enjoy the opportunity to help build something.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know! Or if you have an art piece and need more help, I am your girl!

Thank you!

Welcome, KellyMG! :D

You can volunteer with the Lamplighters your first year . . . . you can even do a walk-up, the Day Of, at around 5pm.

Walk-up volunteerism is often recommended for virgins, because it can be hard to know how you will acclimate to the playa, and how quickly.

Hey there, welcome to ePlaya!

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Oh yeah, second vote for Lamplighters!
They're an awesome bunch, you'll really be doing something great for BRC, and they have stuff like good food too.

They're an easy group to join, and like Savannah said, it's perfect for a new Burner since you can just walk up and say "Hi! I'd like to do this with you!"

If you're not familiar, they are the people who hang the lanterns on the poles along the Esplanade and some of the main avenues. They do a formal procession in the evening to hang them, they take them down in the morning, and during the day they wash and refuel them. It's cooler than it sounds... and you'll make a ton of friends.
When you make a ton of friends, you'll end up finding out about all sorts of other things and it all snowballs until you have two large trucks, a camper, a big trailer, a back yard full of weird shit, and half your stuff is wrecked from playa dust.
Doesn't that sound great?!!

Welcome to ePlaya!

It is well worth it to explore the information on the burningman.org website. This volunteering page says everything I would say:

https://burningman.org/event/volunteering/first-time/

Regional groups are a great way to find art projects who need volunteers preparing for the event. And continuing CG's comment, gathering after the event to work together cleaning off the dust is more fun than it sounds - at least it's more fun as a group!

It is great to see virgins excited about volunteering. Some of my most treasured memories and friends are the result of volunteering.

In terms of walk-up volunteering, we at Astral Headwash love our volunteer headwashers. Just come in anywhere from about 11:45 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday, and we'll be happy to train you and put you to work washing a few heads. Heck, we'll even put you on the waiting list to get one yourself if you'd like.

It's a great way to meet people, and that few minutes of kindness can often make a huge difference in someone's burn, which is an awesome feeling.

As for art projects, it would help to know where you're located? For example, I can direct you to ours in Colorado, but that may not be very helpful to you if you're coming from Florida.

That sounds fun for virgins!
