Re: Thank You, Veterans
I didn't know Lowe's and Home Depot gave discounts every day. I just spent a bunch of money there for moving supplies. I'll remember that for the future.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Elderberry,
All the Lowe's & Home Depots in my area offer the 10% veteran discount every day. I only found out about it in 2013 and use my old ID whenever I think about it.
Around here, they don't advertise it or ask you, you have to ask them and I have yet caused an eye to flutter or any response other than, "...can I see your card".
My local Ace hardware stores Do Not.

Turns out there's a bit of a catch. It's not an all the time discount for all veterans. http://guardianofvalor.com/lowes-and-ho ... explained/

Re: Thank You, Veterans
We were in line at Lowe's behind some guy who was arguing that he was ex-military, and claiming he went on missions so secret that even now he wasn't issued normal ID. Wearing mismatched camo, of course. Dude, really? When it was our turn, Larry quietly showed his actual blue card. All smiles from the cashier. We are near a base, so most of them know the drill.
I don't have a VA card, just my dependa card and a "veteran" on my state ID. That works. I just don't have the time to fuck around down in SLC with the VA office to get a card. They're overworked as it is.

Couple years ago I was in Berlin and at Checkpoint Charlie there were civilians (at least I presume they were) dressed in mock US and Soviet military uniforms so tourists could pose with them. I was in the Navy (61-64) not the Army, but I was surprised at how upset I was seeing people pretending to be military.

Had never given it any thought but you do make a good point. Maybe because the Checkpoint Charlie was in my lifetime that it bothered me.Elderberry wrote:How do you feel about Civil War reenactors?geospyder wrote:Couple years ago I was in Berlin and at Checkpoint Charlie there were civilians (at least I presume they were) dressed in mock US and Soviet military uniforms so tourists could pose with them. Might be the uniform, a civil war uniform would not have personal meaning but fatigues?......
Everyone is so politically fucked up that they're segregating themselves in the name of equal rights and liberation.

Re: Thank You, Veterans
To me they would be just 'actors' probably trying to make a buck getting photographed with tourists. That's different than someone lying and saying they were in the armed forces just to boost their ego or make an impression.

Limits on reason must be had, draw a line on need.
You lie too much people, as a group, and I can prove your bad data set.
Don't use a dirty water as a fact, a life point, you know already.
Feel that.
Feelings and flavors, is that all you are?
Maybe it's you..........
It's you not seeing by standing far enough back.
Try that.

Can't forget the dogs that most branches of the military use.
Saw the movie "Max" last night about a dog that the Marines used in Afganistan. Good movie.

Thank you all. I saw a friend on the street and he just got a job at the VA as a housekeeper. Very thrilling for him. He took one of my extra bikes to commute. Thrilling for me. A BIG 'Thank You' to all who served and all still in.

Re: Thank You, Veterans
thanks for the bump Thecatman!
I wrote a little something yesterday, but got sidetracked and didn't make it back here:
the flags waved,
the friends did cry,
They marched to war,
no questions, "why",
the time away,
of boredom and fear,
sometimes a laugh,
more often, a tear
with family hopes,
too, lovers and friends,
to win the war,
a nation sends
with prayers and hopes
and candles burn,
they marched forth, proud,
some didn't return.
So thanks to them,
who heard the call.
Respect for them,
who gave their all.

Re: Thank You, Veterans
something I wrote a while back, but I think it applies today:
and as he stands.........
a tremble,
unsure steps,
back bent and head drooping.
a cane, to replace his weapon..............
judge not what you see.......this man has seen hell,
he's been there, he's sent others,
and cried,...cried real tears.
the blood and smoke,
the screams of agony, the whisper of it's end.......
it comes from foe......it comes from friend.
See this man, now a shadow,
who was once the tiger
Know the man, who went,
who gave and lost so much,
and did it head held high, lions heart thumping to the drum beat of war.
He'll tell you bravery is merely to stay alive.........to give before you receive
and, know, he speaks from his heart, for he's seen the face of death,
he's danced the spears, and been the last worldly sight of others,
friends, and those whom if not for the whim of another, may have called friend.
Stand aside of his path, lend a hand, and a salute.
Try to understand, the lions heart and mind, are within
Imagine the frustration, living within the earthly shell that remains.
and, if you can, give a smile.
