Box Truck Space - How many campers?

Post by casserolejaime » Thu Jul 20, 2017 9:45 pm

Hey guys!

We have a large camp of 20 this year and are attempting to fit tent gear, 2 yurts, evapotron, shade structure, and 12 bikes in a 26 ft. box truck. Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much gear, in terms of # of campers, a box truck could hold?

Thanks in advance!

No way to tell with such a open/vague question. Not enough detail provided. Center camp is a "shade structure" and it doesn't fit in one truck. See what I mean?

What about water? How much per person? And weight limit of truck. Water is heavy.

The 12 bikes will eat up an ungodly amount of space.

I'd have someone tow in the bikes on a small trailer if that were an option.

20 is not a large camp, though. And a 26 foot truck is pretty big. Camped with a group of about 40 one time that had a 26 foot truck. They also had a large dome, maybe a dozen cubes of flat-top conduit shade structure, 5 or 6 couches, kitchen gear, tents, water barrels, shower, etc etc. Of course, most people tend to bring some amount of gear with them in their own car, such as most bikes.

Think about it another way, that's 20 1-foot slices of the truck; around 42 cubic feet per person and 252 cube left over for shared camp stuff. That's like 9 large tote bins per camper, and 4 couches.

26' should easily fit 20 peoples worth of stuff.

We use a 26' to move a camp for up to 55 people, including 10 hexayurts and over 25 bikes, plus a huge wooden tower (people bring their own food, water and personal baggage).

If you take the pedals off the bikes and turn the handlebars sideways you can pack bikes in a lot tighter but I doubt you'd need to.

Good point about the water and bikes... We've started just getting estimated weights and sizes for these bulky items. Cheers!

This is the kind of anecdotal experience I was looking for, thank you. I'll get weight and size estimates for some of the bulkier items and confirm we have capacity, but this gives me a rough estimate that our load could work.
